Iran was eliminated from the @FIFAWorldCup, and its long held dream of advancing beyond the group stage remains unfulfilled. To illustrate how enduring that aspiration has been, it may be interesting to share a cartoon by Javad Alizadeh that appeared on the cover of the humor magazine Tanz o Caricature before #Iran's 1998 World Cup match against Germany. Alizadeh portrayed the two biggest stars of each team, #Iran's Ali Daei and #Germany's Jürgen Klinsmann, racing toward their respective ambitions. Their thought bubbles captured the contrast perfectly. Above Klinsmann: "More than three championships!" Above Daei: "More than three matches." The cartoon was aptly titled "Great Expectations." Twenty eight years have passed since that match, and forty eight since Iran's first World Cup appearance. Perhaps the next tournament will finally see the national team reach the knockout stage. If so, it will mark the fulfillment of a dream that has endured for 52 years, carried across generations of players and supporters alike.

@diskohomayuni @SasanianShah 100%, I'm not in favour of changing the alphabet at all. Some young Turks (no pun intended) not being able to read the calligraphy in the architecture around their cities is so sad to me. That should never happen to us.

@LFriszt @SasanianShah Yeah certainly it can't be used as is, going to need an adaptation. I more like the by-syllable construction system and how easily it can be learned in a really short amount of time.

@LFriszt @SasanianShah That describes almost every alphabet Persian has ever had though. Aside from Old Persian cuneiform, it's never had an alphabet designed for it from scratch and has always adapted scripts from other languages that started out as aesthetic mismatches.

@SasanianShah For me, it's got the Pahlevi/Aramaic problem where all the letters are really hard to distinguish, but that could just be my untrained eye.
