@HistoricEngland I have never been there. From photos, I judge it favorably as a work of its time. We can now look back at that moment and appraise all the different pomo gambits with a little perspective. I think this one should make us smile.

@ahistoryinart Should be ranked up there with Cadmus, Tooker, French, Koch but wasn't in New York and I think that made a difference. Also, died young, just when the return to figuration was gaining steam.

@SPloeg Reservations and a two-queue entry system, one for locals, another for tourists. Charge more for the latter. If they can afford to come half-way across the world, they can afford to pay more for cultural services.

@MulraineArt There's a lot of bravura in Tissot. A painting like A Garden Bench from 1882 has a painterly fervor that Monet might envy. Often, his finish is not really as polished as it seems in reproduction. It's just that, a bit like Sargent, he was so damn good that it seems that way.

@jsf @NYTmag Fascinating! A big, ambitious argument. Did you consider the thesis the other way around? Modernism not a century of progress but rather an aberration we are slowly waking from? If so, some parts of what you see, like return to "content," make sense.
