𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 I was pleased to host Rachel Gathoni, Managing Trustee and Foundation Manager, Kenya Pipeline Corporation (KPC) Foundation, accompanied by Roseline Odhiambo, Scholarship Coordinator, during a courtesy call at the Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE). Our engagement provided an opportunity to explore potential areas of collaboration in assessment, research, advocacy and publicity, with the shared objective of strengthening support and services for persons with disabilities. Today, I was delighted to welcome Professor Michael Ndurumo to the Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE) as we marked Day Two of Deaf Awareness Week. I wish everyone a Happy Deaf Awareness Week. As we celebrate, let us continue to recognise Kenyan Sign Language (KSL) as a language of inclusion, one that strengthens communication, participation and equal opportunities for the Deaf community. Professor Ndurumo is a pioneer in Deaf education whose contribution to the development of KISE’s special education teacher training model and the advancement of Kenyan Sign Language has left a lasting impact. We are proud to honour pioneers whose knowledge, dedication and contribution have helped shape Deaf education in Kenya. Their legacy continues to inspire our commitment to advancing inclusive education and creating a society where every learner can communicate, participate and thrive. I appreciate the Ministry of Education, our development partners and all stakeholders for their deliberate efforts towards making inclusion a reality in Kenya. We continue to recognise Education Assessment and Resource Centres (EARCs) as game changers in the early identification, assessment and support of learners with disabilities. I was also keen to share the progress of the nationwide Assistive Devices Needs Assessment, which is still ongoing in Dadaab and Kakuma refugee camps. The data generated will be critical in informing planning and ensuring that appropriate assistive devices reach learners who need them. I further highlighted the progress made through the Training of Trainers (ToTs), who were trained last week and are now commencing the cascade training of 4,800 teachers across the country. KISE is committed to working closely with the Ministry of Education, World Bank, National Treasury, TSC, KNEC and other partners to advance equitable, inclusive and quality education for every learner. Today, I had the opportunity to address participants during the Training of Trainers under the World Bank-supported Kenya Primary Education Equity in Learning (KPEEL) Project. The trainers we are equipping will cascade the knowledge and skills acquired to over 4,800 teachers through online training, strengthening early identification and support for learners with disabilities. I also emphasised the important role the trained personnel will play in supporting the operationalisation of the Regional Education Assessment and Resource Centres (EARCs) As KISE advances the establishment of the National Assistive Devices Factory, this training must go beyond assessment. Participants will also acquire skills in repairing assistive devices, helping ensure that learners can access and continue using essential support. I urged the trainers to take the knowledge and skills gained with utmost care as KISE walks this journey with them. As we continue with our mandate of empowering persons with disabilities across Kenya, I am reminded daily of how much more we can achieve when we work together. There's a significant scope for collaboration in research, innovation, assistive technology, inclusive communication, resource mobilization and strengthening services for persons with disabilities and their families. No single institution can do this alone. We need researchers to help us understand emerging needs. We need innovators and technology partners to help us close the assistive-technology gap. We need communicators to help us build a society where inclusion is the norm, not the exception. And we need partners ,government, development agencies, the private sector, and civil society willing to mobilize resources toward this cause.

This afternoon, I had the pleasure of hosting a delegation from the Miral Welfare Foundation Malawi Branch at the Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE) for a courtesy and knowledge-exchange visit. We engaged on Kenya’s special needs education system, teacher training, and the education and support services available for children with disabilities. The delegation also sought to learn from KISE’s operations and practices as they explore lessons that can inform and strengthen special education programming in Malawi. The engagement provided a valuable platform for sharing experiences, learning from one another and exploring opportunities to strengthen collaboration and knowledge exchange in advancing inclusive education and disability support across Africa.

This morning, I had the honour of welcoming key stakeholders to a high-level Stakeholders Breakfast convened by the Office of Diversity, Inclusion and Disability Rights, focused on advancing Kenya’s Diversity, Inclusion and Disability Rights Agenda. The engagement brought together key stakeholders to strengthen collaboration, deepen dialogue and identify practical pathways for translating our commitments on diversity, inclusion and disability rights into meaningful action. As KISE, we remain committed to contributing to a society where diversity is embraced, inclusion is strengthened and the rights of persons with disabilities are fully recognised and upheld. This morning, I had the honour of welcoming stakeholders to a high-level breakfast convened by the Office of Diversity, Inclusion and Disability Rights in the Executive Office of the President, spearheaded by Hon. Isaac Mwaura at Kenya Institute of Special Education. In my remarks , I underscored the importance of sustained dialogue, collaboration and collective action in advancing disability inclusion and ensuring that persons with disabilities can fully participate in society. KISE is deliberate in its efforts to expand access to assistive technology, including the development of the National Assistive Devices Factory to support the local production of quality, context-appropriate assistive devices. Mentioning the ongoing nationwide needs assessment across all 47 counties, as we deliberately identify learners who require assistive devices and specialised learning materials to generate data that will inform targeted interventions.
