Who has been impacted the most by the new Closing Auction Session (CAS)? In my view, the biggest impact is on traders who built non-directional strategies around selling OTM options. Especially strategies where: OTM strikes were sold Premium decay was the primary edge Stop-losses were used to manage risk Small, consistent returns were targeted After CAS, option premium behaviour appears to have changed—and simply getting the market direction right may no longer be enough. Premium decay, intraday movement and expiry-day behaviour cannot be assumed to work the way they did earlier. This doesn’t mean OTM option selling is dead. But if your entire edge was based on “OTM premium will eventually decay,” blindly following old backtests can be dangerous. Market structure changes → premium behaviour changes → strategy edge can change. Don’t look at a 5–10 year backtest and assume it will automatically work in today’s market regime. Validate the strategy in the new regime first. Then deploy capital. — @KrishAlpha7

SEBI, exchanges and financial institutions are celebrating the impact of the new Closing Auction Session (CAS). And yes, the new mechanism has already changed trading patterns and derivative activity. Reports show a sharp fall in the number of contracts traded on BSE after CAS, even as premium turnover increased. But here’s my question: If the institutions are celebrating the outcome, while thousands of retail traders are protesting against the same change, do you really think a few social-media posts will be enough to change anything? Retail traders need more than outrage. We need data, representation, constructive dialogue and collective action. Because when a regulator introduces a structural change, the only way to influence the next decision is to present a strong, evidence-based case. Protest is a voice. Data is leverage. SIP is a method, not a return guarantee. We have marketed SIPs so aggressively that people sometimes forget the most important part equity returns are not linear. A mutual fund may deliver 12–15% CAGR over a long period, but that doesn’t mean you’ll earn 12–15% every year. You could invest for 10 years and still experience long periods of mediocre returns. The strongest returns may come in just a few years — but nobody knows exactly when those years will arrive. That’s the part rarely discussed when SIP success stories are presented. SIP helps with: Discipline Regular investing Avoiding the pressure of timing every entry Compounding over long periods But SIP does not remove: Market risk Drawdowns Long periods of underperformance Valuation risk Sequence/timing risk when you actually need the money The problem isn’t SIP. The problem is selling SIP as if it guarantees a predictable outcome. Returns are uncertain. Discipline is controllable. That’s the conversation investors actually need to have. @KrishAlpha7
