Only a few days separate Gaza City from complete collapse. What remains of life here is falling apart before the eyes of the world. Desalination plants have stopped, and bakeries, factories, power generators, and vehicles are shutting down one after another due to the lack of fuel and oil. Within days, ambulances and hospital services may completely stop. In hospitals, injured people and patients are dying because of the lack of medicine, medical equipment, and the resources needed to save their lives. There are no sufficient medical supplies, no prosthetic limbs for those who have lost their limbs, and no wheelchairs for the injured and people with disabilities. Most essential materials are being prevented from entering. There is no wood, no iron, no cement, and no materials to rebuild what has been destroyed. Even caravans and shelter units are not allowed to enter. Waste is piling up, and there is no ability to remove or manage it, increasing the spread of diseases and making life more unbearable day after day. The economy is collapsing, unemployment is rising at an alarming rate, aid is decreasing, and thousands of families are struggling just to obtain the most basic necessities of life. An entire city is being brought to a standstill before the eyes of the world. What is the world waiting for before it acts? If the world can see an entire city collapsing, injured people dying in hospitals, and people losing the most basic necessities of life… when will it finally move?

Made in America. Hidden in Berkshire. Dropped on Iran. Tucked away off an obscure exit from the east-bound M4 near Swindon is a military base referred to regularly in the local press as ‘secret’. What is the connection between this obscure RAF facility and the mass destruction of civilian infrastructure in Iran in March and April this year? Back then we saw reports of attacks on the desalination plants in Qeshm Island, and commercial and energy infrastructure targets in Bandar Abbas, which also caused noted civilian casualities. There were also reports of attacks on Kashan International Airport, including on civilian infrastructure such as passenger terminals. Serious bombs were dropped in Isfahan, destroying the protected Shah Mosque heritage site and causing civilian deaths among facility workers and nearby residents. In the recent resumption of daily US attacks on Iran, it has been reported that the planes dropping the bombs have come from RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire. One thing connecting all these incidents is that the bombs in the long range bombers came from a little-known location in the sleepy Berkshire countryside. Perhaps it’s surprising to learn that the RAF were involved, but here’s the thing: Welford is not an RAF base any more. Rather, it’s the largest US bomb arsenal in the UK, and the second largest in Europe. The bombs stored here are transported by road to RAF Fairford where they are loaded onto long-range B-1 and B-52 bombers. Mainstream reporting by the BBC as well as in independent media like the Canary and Declassified UK have all described the goings on at RAF Fairford. There’s a powerful new documentary out called Earth’s Greatest Enemy by @AbbyMartin about the ecocidal abuses of the US war machine, and it addresses the most pressing existential hurdles we face as a species like nothing I’ve seen before. The film breaks down how the US military has become the single most environmentally destructive institution on our planet by an extremely massive margin, walking the audience through the many ways the Pentagon and its global metastases have been churning out carbon emissions, pouring toxins into the air and water, wiping out precious ecosystems for gratuitous military bases, and pummeling our sea life with sonar and noise pollution, all while gleefully salivating at the prospect of plundering the resources which lay hidden beneath our planet’s rapidly thawing polar ice caps. Martin skillfully ties the planet-devouring behavior of the US military to the global systems of capitalism and imperialism it was built to uphold. The viewer is left with a crystal clear picture of the ways ecocide, militarism and capitalism are inseparably intertwined, and an understanding that meaningfully opposing any of these malignancies necessarily entails opposing them all. The liberal fiction that one can be pro-environment while also supporting the US military is forcefully exposed for the absurdity that it is. It’s a jarring film with extremely dark subject matter, but it also manages to be a work of transcendent beauty and optimism. A deep love of humans and all of earth’s creatures shines through in shot after shot, while slick editing and an inspired soundtrack allow the movie to zip along at a lively and entertaining pace. Martin concludes with a galvanizing call to use our outrage to loosen the empire’s already weakening grip on humanity’s collective consciousness, because our entire world depends on it. Perhaps the most touching aspect of the documentary is the personal element Martin chose to bring in to her overarching narrative. She discusses how she and her husband (antiwar activist Mike Prysner, who co-directed the film) had their lives forever altered when they had kids and experienced a new level of urgency to help give rise to a brighter future. Their family of four becomes a microcosm of humanity’s struggle to liberate itself from the tyranny of the machine to create a better world for our children, and we see Martin’s love for her son and daughter reflected in a great tenderness for the world as a whole. Anyway, I’ve never felt inclined to write a film review before so I don’t know if I’ve done a good job of encouraging people to watch this thing, but for my own audience I truly cannot recommend Earth’s Greatest Enemy enough. What is happening now is the ultimate humiliation and an insult to our intelligence. This yellow cube is not just a mark on a map. It is a death sentence for an entire neighborhood. The moment it appears, everyone is forced to leave, and the area comes under military control. Every day, another yellow cube appears. Every day, another part of Gaza is taken. The city is disappearing piece by piece before the world’s eyes, while the space where more than two million people are forced to live continues to shrink. A new and extremely dangerous nightmare is unfolding in Gaza City, yet almost no one in the world is paying attention. Massive sand berms are being built behind the line established during the war, with some reportedly reaching up to 30 meters in height. According to satellite imagery and videos that have circulated publicly, these earthworks continue to expand, while more than 70% of the Gaza Strip now falls within or beyond this area. We are literally living inside a tightly sealed prison. We cannot leave, people cannot enter, and patients are unable to travel for medical treatment. We are trapped by land, sea, and air, while the space where more than two million people can live continues to shrink day after day. How is all of this happening? Where is the ceasefire we were promised? Where are the commitments to improve the humanitarian situation? What we see on the ground does not reflect hope it reflects a reality that is becoming more difficult with every passing day. We cannot continue living like this. An entire city cannot be left to face this fate while the world watches in silence.

The reorganization of American power is not something that will be decided in America. America will be the last to decide it. Because the people inside the system, inside the culture that was built to make the system feel like nature, like gravity, like the inevitable arrangement of a world organized around merit and freedom, are the least equipped to see the system clearly. It will be decided in the countries that are already building alternative payment systems to avoid dollar coercion. It will be decided in the trade relationships forming outside Western financial architecture. It will be decided in the military alliances taking shape outside NATO's structure. It will be decided in every government that looks at the American political circus, the dysfunction, the corruption made visible, the gap between the imperial rhetoric and the domestic reality, and recalculates the cost-benefit of American alignment. The empire's power was always partly physical: the bases, the carriers, the dollar. But it was also partly psychological: the belief, held by governments and elites around the world, that alignment with Washington was the rational choice because Washington was going to win. That belief is the thing that is breaking. Not all at once. Not uniformly. With backsliding and reversals and regional variation. But breaking. And when enough governments in enough places complete that recalculation, when the psychological architecture of unipolarity dissolves, the physical architecture will follow. It always does. The empire ends not when it runs out of weapons. It ends when it runs out of believers. We are watching that number fall. Slowly. Then all at once.
