Interesting morning at the Trafford Moving Conference. Important to discuss barriers many face in engaging in physical activity, e.g. people with disabilities/from minority groups. Trafford works collaboratively through the NHS, local authorities and charities to address this.
A while ago I got an email from Milly Khan, a Neuro-Physiotherapists working at Guys and St Thomas’ Hospital explaining the benefits of high intensity exercise for people living with Parkinson’s disease. In her message she said: "You may not be aware but high intensity exercise is really important for Parkinson’s patients, especially those in the early stages of the disease. When people work at a high HR level an amazing chemical called BDNF is released within the brain. This chemical increases the brain's ability to change and adapt. Recent research suggests that doing 30-45 minutes of high intensity exercise 3x a week can create new neural pathways in the brain. This supports the theory that exercise may slow the progression of Parkinson’s but more research is needed to confirm this. Either way, exercise has shown to improve people’s walking, balance, sleep and quality of life." Just completed my 2nd out of 3 Introductory Bobath courses, run by my former employer @UHDBTrust / @NCORE_NHS. Well worth the trip down the M6/A50 to make it here to enhance my neuro-rehab knowledge and skills.

Wow, this show is a bit too close to home with my experiences of working on ITU over COVID. Being newly qualified at the time - and being thrown into these experiences both terrified me, and helped me to grow hugely as a Physio. You had to learn fast. Never again, I hope!

5 yrs ago today I had a moderate stroke from a vertebral artery tear caused by a chiropractic neck adjustment. After 6 days in hospital, I couldn’t drive for a month and needed a walker and cane. I’m grateful each day for my recovery. Don’t let anyone touch your neck friends. ❤️
