Ro, the 2.5% isn’t the rebuttal you think it is. You’re measuring what today’s billionaires currently remit in personal income tax and treating that as the state’s total exposure. That’s a static calculation to a dynamic problem. California’s own budget says the top 1% of earners have historically paid about 45% of resident personal income taxes. Personal income tax is the state’s largest General Fund revenue source. The question isn’t whether 200 billionaires currently write enough checks. It’s what happens when California tells the world’s most mobile founders, investors and wealth creators that remaining here carries an entirely new tax risk. We already have evidence. Nearly 30% of the wealth base Hoover expected Prop 40 to tax left before the residency cutoff. Their model doesn’t produce a $100B windfall. It produces roughly $40B in collections and a negative $24.7B net present value after accounting for lost future income-tax revenue. You can disagree with their assumptions. But you can’t answer a dynamic revenue problem with “2.5%.” Even California’s own LAO concedes Prop 40 is temporary revenue purchased at the cost of an ongoing loss of General Fund revenue as some billionaires leave. And here’s what gets lost in all of this: You’re asking Californians the easiest possible question: “Would you like billionaires to pay another 5%?” Of course that polls well. Ask the harder question. Would you rather have a one-time tax on ~200 people, with an uncertain long-term fiscal and economic cost, or have Sacramento actually lower the cost of living for 39 million Californians? Housing. Insurance. Energy. Gas. Health care. Food. That’s the road trip I’d like to take with you. Because a billionaire tax is politically satisfying. Making California affordable requires sound economic modeling and governing.

There used to be a time where everyone deeply admired business leaders.” Yes, Ro. And business leaders didn’t mysteriously lose the public’s respect. Years of deep-blue dogma taught Americans that extraordinary success is suspect, billionaires shouldn’t exist, and those who build, create, and succeed are the villains. Politicians like you, the special interests that fund them, and an ecosystem of overpaid consultants and think tanks have spent years undermining that legitimacy, often at the behest of an elite few seemingly determined to atone for their own inherited wealth and privilege. Which makes this particularly rich coming from you. You rose with the support of some of the very Silicon Valley business leaders and investors you now cast as the “capital class” in your morality play. And some of them now oppose the billionaire tax you’re championing. Business leaders don’t need politicians to restore their legitimacy. They need politicians to stop undermining it. I’m sure the people who helped you earn your seat are pleased with the transformation.

The age of the 40-year-old founder is back. Bryant Chou spent 12 years as CTO of Webflow, which now powers something like 1.5% of the entire internet. He's back in the current YC batch with Ploy, an AI marketing platform, and he describes himself as "a bit of a boomer, double the age of the YC founders." But over 13% of his batch is already using his product, within months of launch. There is a side of the argument which destroyed one of the main edges young founders have, which was being faster and cheaper at building.... speed is everyones game. If what's left is knowing what to build this is more likely to come from spending 15 years watching an industry up close, collecting the thousand small frustrations that tell you where the real problem is. Bryant can build an anti-slop website tool because he spent over a decade learning exactly why websites are slop. So I'm updating. I don't think it's young vs. old. I think AI rewards whoever has the most domain knowledge to point it at, and only sometimes is this younger founders who are thinking outside of the box...

California’s Property Seizure Act - called “The Billionaire Tax” to fool voters is now on the ballot. @HooverInst has a short 4min video breaking it down. youtu.be/x6k4W5Qzg8U?is… You should vote for this if you are comfortable handing over 5%, in cash, of all your tangible and intangible property every year. You should vote no if you don’t want to do that. If it passes, the remaining Billionaires will sue. This will take a decade to meander through the courts and will find its way to the Supreme Court where the odds it survives are low. But in that intervening decade, far fewer business builders will want to bet on California and will focus on building in other states. This will drive a large loss of revenue that will make California’s budget hole even worse. The only solution there is more borrowing and higher taxes on EVERYONE including those that voted NO. This will particularly impact the middle class who are Californias largest revenue source. The only path out of an avoidable budget spiral is a hard landing and structural reset. Sadly, a hard landing will mean a near-miss with California bankruptcy and, more punitively, a reset/retrade of state pensions with California lenders to not come collect. If you aren’t sure or don’t believe me, vote YES and bookmark this post. A decade from now you can tell me I was wrong or give me the opportunity to lord over your stupidity, jealousy and gullibility for voting YES when I am proven right.
