In a statement the family said: "At this stage, we understand that the incident is not being treated as a hate crime, However, given the circumstances and the impact this attack has had on us, we believe it is essential that all possible motives are thoroughly examined and that no line of inquiry is ruled out prematurely. The family is horrified as to why we were targeted. We are grateful that no one was seriously injured, and we wish to thank the emergency services for their swift response in bringing the incident under control. This attack has left our family feeling shocked and unsafe in our own home. No individual or family should have to experience such fear and uncertainty," they continued. We ask anyone who may have information about this incident to come forward and assist the Police with the investigation.

I am deeply saddened by the brutal killing of three men at the Islamic Center of San Diego, among them a security guard and two members of the school's staff. I extend my prayers and condolences to those affected. The alarming rise of Islamophobia requires urgent action. None of this happens in a vacuum. The normalisation of anti-Muslim rhetoric, fanned online, in the media and in everyday life builds the climate of hate that can lead to such horrific acts. This moment should be one of reflection and seriousness. If we continue to allow such levels of hate to be normalised, we must consider what the consequences can be.
