On January 3, 2012, Staff Sergeant Courtney Jo Rush lost her battle with PTSD. She was 27 years old. The Air Force lost an exceptional airman. Her family lost a daughter, a sister, a loved one. Her friends lost someone irreplaceable. And the invisible wound that kills more veterans than enemy fire claimed another victim. Here's what's important to understand about Courtney's story: She wasn't weak. She survived two war zones. She maintained aircraft that saved countless lives. She earned a position of immense responsibility through pure excellence. She was, by every measure, a warrior. PTSD isn't about weakness. It's about the human cost of war—the price that continues long after the shooting stops. It's about the brain chemistry that changes when you work under constant stress. It's about the neural pathways that rewire when you experience trauma. It's about the invisible injuries that don't show up on X-rays or Purple Heart citations. Since 2001, more American service members have died by suicide than in combat operations in Iraq and Afghanistan combined. Read that again. More have died by their own hand—struggling with invisible wounds—than have died fighting the enemy. Courtney Jo Rush's death wasn't a failure of character. It was a failure of the system that sent her to war but didn't fully bring her home. The military has improved since 2012. There's more awareness now, more resources, more understanding that mental health injuries are real injuries. There are hotlines, counselors, peer support programs, and reduced stigma around seeking help. But it's not enough. It's never enough when we're still losing warriors to wounds we can't see. She could strip and rebuild a C-17 engine in the dark. She survived two war zones. What killed her was coming home to a battle she shouldn't have had to fight alone. We honor her service.
