Thokozani. 🤍 There are things our elders taught us that were never written in books. Some were taught through stories, some through observation, and some through experience. Whether you believe in spirituality, culture, or simply respecting your home, these are lessons worth reflecting on. 1. Respect what carries your food and water. Avoid eating or drinking from cracked or chipped cups, plates, or bowls. In many traditions, cracks symbolize brokenness, loss, and stagnation. If you can replace it, do so. Let your home reflect wholeness, not brokenness. 2. Gratitude is more than saying "thank you." Gratitude is an energy. It changes how you receive blessings. A thankful heart notices abundance where others only see lack. What you appreciate, you make room for. 3. Don't become a hoarder. Holding onto everything blocks the flow of life. A house filled with things that no longer serve you can also become heavy in spirit. Release what is broken, expired, and no longer useful. Make space for new blessings to enter. 4. Prosperity begins at home. Not every blessing requires a complicated ritual. Sometimes prosperity starts with a clean home, a peaceful heart, respect for your ancestors, prayer, discipline, and gratitude. Never underestimate the power of simple, consistent actions. 5. Be mindful of what enters your home. Everything carries energy. Furniture, clothes, gifts, antiques, even items bought second-hand have their own history. Ask questions. Cleanse what needs cleansing. Not everything belongs in your sacred space. 6. Protect your newborn. Bazali, a newborn does not need to smell like perfume. I am not saying a baby must be unhygienic. Our elders understood that a baby's fontanelle is delicate, and many cultures have protective practices for this stage of life. Speak to your elders and learn your family's traditions. Babies are spiritually sensitive. 7. Listen when children speak. Do not silence a child before hearing them. Children often notice what adults overlook. Whether you see it spiritually or psychologically, children observe deeply. Sometimes their words carry wisdom, warnings, or messages we should not ignore. 8. Teach children their roots. Teach them amasiko. Let them know their family history. Let them greet at the umsamo with respect. Let them understand the importance of isibaya where it is part of your family's traditions. A child who knows where they come from stands stronger in the world. 9. Honour every child born into your family. If you have experienced the painful loss of a stillborn baby, speak with your family elders about the appropriate cultural and spiritual practices according to your tradition. Every family and culture is different, but many believe that acknowledging and honouring that child's life brings peace and healing to the family. 10. Stop hiding life-changing secrets from children. Many parents believe they are protecting their children by hiding the truth. Often, the silence creates deeper wounds than the truth itself. Children are observant. They notice changes, emotions, and behaviour long before adults realise it. Age-appropriate honesty builds trust. Secrets often become pain carried into adulthood. Remember this: A home is more than bricks and furniture. It is a living space filled with memories, prayers, laughter, tears, ancestors, children, and energy. Guard it carefully. Teach with love. Correct with wisdom. Respect your traditions. And never stop learning from those who walked before you. May your home be filled with peace, wisdom, protection, and blessings.
