An Aging Man’s View on 250 years of American Excellence: I know the world is catching up (not really but that’s what we’re supposed to think to stay ahead). The Hoover Dam, Empire State Building, and Golden Gate Bridge were American engineering achievements of the 1930s. It took until 1996 for the world to surpass the height of the Empire State building. It wasn’t until 1981 that the length and span of the Golden Gate Bridge was surpassed by a foreign nation. It took until 2013 for the rest of the world to surpass the engineering marvel of the Hoover Dam. We are still the only nation to put men on the moon, and we did it SIX times. We have 7 satellites that have traveled farther from the Earth than anything in human history, nobody else is even close. And the amazing thing is all of those are still communicating with our engineers on earth. There is only one nation capable of rescuing humans from space. I would argue that we have gotten worse at fighting war, but there was a time when we were 7-0. We may not have lost the most men in World War II, but World War II would never have been won without the United States manufacturing sector, supplying all the Allied nations with what it took to win the war. And despite all the claims of racism, sexism and homophobia, there’s only one nation on Earth that is the top of the list for immigration. People don’t move to a country they think they’re going to be killed in. They moved from those nations into to safety America offers. And to be clear, without the welcoming arms of its loving citizens, the safety the government may offer is meaningless. We’re 250 years old. And we’re still amazing.
