This was an election based on fear. The CPC got more votes than in any previous election in history because of people's fear of the LPC, but still lost because the libs rallied under the fear of manufactured threats pushed by the government-controlled media: fears of Trump, climate change, billionaires, guns, fake claims of positive "rights" being taken away, and disinformation. Ironically, the government is the biggest spreader of disinformation of all, and, under another Liberal government ruled by Carney, that is only going to get worse. The MSM will receive billions more in funding for getting their benefactors in government re-elected, and, at some point, I fully expect the government to ban, or take over, social media like they have in many other authoritarian countries. Rather than calling out the fear mongering for what it is and potentially defusing the situation, the CPC tried riding the same wave and added fuel to the fire. To some extent, it worked. That much is evident by the high voter turnout in favor of the CPC. However, it also backfired. As they perpetuated the Trump threat hoax, the incumbents and their media lapdogs were able to twist that fear into a smear campaign on Poilievre. With enough repetition, the lie became fact. People showed up in massive herds, elbows up all the way, to vote against "Trump." The lesson is clear: fear mongering wins elections and consolidates power. So, expect a lot more of it. There will always be something new to be afraid of, and the sitting government will make sure everyone knows about it. The pandemic has shown us that as fear increases, so does tendency to vote for and support authoritarian public policy (as if countless instances found in historical context wasn't enough to make that obvious). For those of you who thought "we need to vote Conservative to get rid of the Liberals," you did (in record numbers), but you still lost anyway, and at what cost? Your mainstream parties have perpetuated fear that has contributed to the near-destruction of the diverse multi-party parliamentary system that makes our democracy possible. We have less diversity of opinion now than we did before the election. We now have less willingness to even try voting third-party. We are one step closer to a permanent one-party autocracy. Worst of all, there is no voice of reason in government. All of the same trends will continue to happen. All of the same fear-mongering narratives will continue to be pushed. And if you thought this election was a fluke, think again. Even if we collectively wake up to the reality that Trump was never an actual threat, climate change is disproportionately exaggerated, people who own more than you aren't your enemy, going after legal gun owners doesn't make the streets safer, no one is coming after your rights to all of the free stuff the Liberals have promised you, and that attacking free speech doesn't protect you from disinformation, there will always be a new existential crisis or emergency to keep you and other voters afraid to defy the status quo. They'll continue manufacturing fear because they know it wins elections. So, where does this leave us? Look at the current political trends to find out. Third-party candidates in this election have lost a whopping 20 seats and got decimated in the popular vote. Neither major party supports electoral reform, and there are feedback loops at play that will make it likely for that trend to continue. The sitting government indirectly controls the media, which they use to instill fear and consolidate power. Mass immigration is being used to replace disenfranchised voters with newcomers who can vote after three years and are told by the media to vote Liberal because the Conservatives hate them and want to take away their healthcare or sell them to Trump, the most racist dictator in history, where they'll be enslaved or put in death camps. Our government sells out our future by tackling made-up problems at an unimaginable cost in opportunity. Our healthcare system will soon be non-existent. No one under 30 is ever going to be able to retire. It's going to be next to impossible for most young people to own a home. The writing is on the wall for the imposition of a social credit score and the destruction of property rights, which has been explicitly endorsed and recommended by the Canada Beyond 150 initiative that Justin Trudeau commissioned. Carney has pushed his net-zero fantasy over and over again. If you voted for him because he temporarily lowered gas prices before the election, you are in for a rude awakening when your gas car gets banned and the only alternatives are $100k+ EVs (plus whatever tariff they're charging at the moment) or public transit. Have you noticed the increase in our homeless population that is casually becoming the norm in Canada, which the bleeding-heart Liberals have been unable to stop? They are, in fact, directly responsible for this problem. What will life be like when freezing to death in the winter is considered a normal part of life in Canada? Maybe they'll be so gracious as to extend MAID to poor families to put them out of their misery. I'm sure the party's supporters will justify it somehow. This is what happens when we focus on made-up problems and ignore real ones—like increasing poverty and erosion of our liberties—while centralizing power. The elbows-up crowd, who has had their heads buried in the ground over the past 10 years, want to continue to pretend they don't see a problem here. But these are trends that exist today, and, for all of the excuses the LPC has made for how we got to this point (COVID, climate change, Trump, and others), we don't have any solutions because the only real solution would be to admit they made a mistake, and that is next to impossible. Unfortunately, CPC cannot be your knight in shining armour. They're too big. Too afraid to rock the boat and stir up controversy. I have already done a write-up on their platform, which was non-existent up until a week before the election. But, if that weren't enough, their candidates are kept on a short leash, and when they take a stand on an issue that isn't part of the main script, they get kicked out of the party and replaced by lackeys who do exactly what they're told and parrot the given slogans verbatim. That's precisely what happened to the CPC candidate in my riding, @s_shermineh, who was poised to win in this election. How can any political party make the changes we need to fix this country if they are afraid of controversy? It seems to be that the party has no interest in fixing Canada at all. The goal (and only goal) is simply to obtain power. Perhaps for the lucrative salary and pensions, insider trading opportunities, and pathway to the Senate where members can show up for work 80-90 days per year while they play on their phones and sign the bills that they're paid to sign by corporate lobbyists. Does Canada have a future? Or are we on track to end up like one of the many other countries affected by mass poverty, skyrocketing crime, no rule of law, and rampant political and judicial corruption? I would love to believe there's hope, but that doesn't seem likely if current trends continue. This election has shown us that Canada is a two-horse race. It won't be long before it turns into a one-horse race and we lose all checks and balances. We urgently need to move in the opposite direction. What you might not realize is that it is already extremely difficult for third parties to run in Canada. Mainstream parties get millions of dollars in funding and unknowable amounts of value in media focus. Small parties and independents get treated like they don't exist or like their ideas are fringe or unacceptable. People hoping to make a difference in this country avoid small parties under the belief that they can't get enough votes to win. Then, they get stuck running for parties that go along with whatever narrative the media is pushing. For Canada to survive this and to continue to be a country worth living in, there needs to be a movement to view the two-party system as an enemy to the public. I'm calling for every single Canadian—whether you're on the left or the right—to vote against the autocratic two-party system. Stop looking at sending out the most robocalls or having the most signs as a strength, and start voting against it. Vote against anyone who funds "journalism." Make things like electoral reform a deal-breaking issue and hold the mainstream parties accountable. You are forced unwillingly to support the mainstream parties on the order of $100M through your taxes. That's around $5 per taxpayer on average. Fight against that by donating 10x more than that to a third party that supports your views - and more, if you are able to. Volunteer your time to help out your local candidates. Tell every single one of your friends and family members to do the same. I do not want to live in a one-party state, and neither should you. This is the single greatest threat facing Canada today. Not Trump. Not climate change. Not whether or not my party of choice wins. If we do not have the ability to effect change when it's needed, then we no longer live in a democracy. Wake up, Canada.
