I spent about 18 months working up there. It’s cool, very exciting, and very fast paced… But wearing a sweater, long pants, a float coat, boots, cranial, a tool pouch, and a camelback in the middle of the hot summer day in the Persian gulf is not a pleasant experience. We’d stand behind jet exhaust just to feel a breeze. But being up there at night after flight ops is something that I’ll never forget. When everything is calm and you stand on the bow - a clear sky above reflecting on an endless ocean in all directions, 100 thousand tons of steel behind you with dozens of war birds getting ready for the next day… that was surreal. I’d sneak away when doing grease jobs just to experience that moment for a while.

I don’t think that’s the right way to look at it. Anthropic needed compute faster than they could build it themselves. This deal was mutually beneficial. Anthropic meets its goals now while xAI profits and reinvests. It may not be ideal long term but a short-term token deal was likely their best or only move financially.
