A U.S. court has approved the largest copyright recovery in American history, ordering Anthropic to pay $1.5 billion for training its AI on pirated books. In what stands as the largest known copyright recovery in U.S. history, a federal judge finalized a $1.5 billion class-action settlement between the artificial intelligence company Anthropic and a group of authors and publishers. The case originated when thriller novelist Andrea Bartz and other creators alleged that the developer of the Claude chatbot had downloaded hundreds of thousands of copyrighted books from piracy sites such as Library Genesis. Rather than proceed to a full trial, Anthropic agreed to the substantial settlement, which covers approximately 482,000 books. Eligible rights holders are expected to receive about $3,000 for each affected work. More than 91 percent of the eligible titles have already been claimed by authors and publishers. Although the record settlement represents a major victory for writers, it leaves the broader legal question of generative AI training unsettled. The court made an important distinction: while the technical process of training an AI model on copyrighted material might qualify as fair use, the unauthorized downloading and storage of pirated copies constitutes a clear copyright violation. The decision therefore signals that AI companies may learn from copyrighted texts under fair-use principles, provided they obtain the training data through legitimate, paid channels rather than from shadow libraries. With numerous other copyright lawsuits still pending, this landmark ruling indicates that the contest over creative rights in the age of artificial intelligence is far from finished.
