This week in South Sudanese history: on July 20, 2024, South Sudan's men's national basketball team came within one point of defeating the United States in a pre-Olympic exhibition at the O2 Arena in London. The final score was 101 to 100. South Sudan, ranked 33rd in the world and preparing for the country's first Olympic appearance in basketball, led by 14 points at halftime. With about 20 seconds remaining, a three-pointer by JT Thor put South Sudan ahead 100 to 99. LeBron James answered with a driving layup with eight seconds left, and South Sudan's final attempts missed. James led the United States with 23 points. Carlik Jones recorded a triple-double for South Sudan, with 15 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists. The team, known as the Bright Stars, qualified for the Paris Olympics as the top-finishing African side at the 2023 FIBA World Cup. The program was rebuilt from 2019 under former NBA player Luol Deng, who served as president of the South Sudan Basketball Federation and personally financed much of the team's operations. Eight days after the London game, on July 28, 2024, South Sudan beat Puerto Rico 90 to 79 in Lille for the country's first Olympic basketball victory, in its first Olympic Games as an independent nation.

BREAKING | Abyei Residents Block Sudan–South Sudan Border Over Khartoum’s Election Claims Residents of the Abyei Administrative Area on Tuesday morning shut down key border crossing points between Sudan and South Sudan, protesting a controversial statement from Khartoum regarding the region's electoral status. The demonstration was sparked by a declaration from the Sudanese government asserting that Abyei would not be permitted to participate in South Sudan’s upcoming general elections, scheduled for December 2026. Angry demonstrators completely rejected Khartoum's assertion of authority over the contested territory. Speaking from the border, protest leaders described Sudan’s claims as "unacceptable" and "a direct violation of the self-determination of the Abyei people." The community reiterated its unwavering stance that Abyei is historically and culturally part of South Sudan, demanding that their right to vote in South Sudan’s December 2026 polls be respected. "We will not allow Khartoum to dictate our political future. Our alignment is with South Sudan, and we will participate in the upcoming democratic exercise," said one of the protest organizers. The border blockade has halted commercial and human traffic between the two nations, raising concerns over regional trade and security. Senegal really tried; we all know they were robbed in the last minutes of the match. But behind the scenes, we are unaware of what those players are going through. Senegal's coach went unpaid for 5-6 months while managing the national team without a salary. The players received no bonuses due to the federation's poor management. Even in terms of food and nutrition, there was malnutrition in the camp at the World Cup because the food was unhealthy and unsuitable for athletes, forcing players to buy their own from shops and restaurants. This was part of bigger camp issues: a cheap hotel, financial problems (delayed bonuses), and poor federation management. The players and staff were all affected. This was a show of resilience but woe to corruption in African football management.
