View from the ivory towers of Tara Street... 2,000 words today from the Irish Times on the demise (for now) of Phoenix magazine, which concludes that its downfall primarily stems from the effective elimination of corruption in the State, thanks to tribunals and that. The elimination of corruption means the demand isn't there for a magazine like Phoenix! Below is an extract of the opinion poll conducted by the Electoral Commission in aftermath of local and European elections in 2024. Outside the ivory towers of Tara Street, does this suggest that corruption in public life is now extinct? And the Irish Times has the neck to criticise Phoenix for its "fixation" on the "undermining" of Ireland's neutrality. This is the same Irish Times which has a master algorithm to relentlessly promote militarisation and the destruction of the Triple Lock. The bell has tolled for Phoenix, sure. But the Irish Times is just keeping its head above water thanks to the Government giving it zero VAT in 2023 (worth around €5m year to the group to its bottom line) and in 2026, it will receive €1.259m from Coimisiun na Mean plus €252k in a joint grant with Connacht Tribune. We'd estimate paper sales of its main paper at less than 30,000 a day, and would take the digital subs claims with a desert-sized helping of salt. Tara Towers isn't immune from the bell-tolling itself.

Many significant periods in human and geological history have experienced temperatures that exceed modern levels—entirely independent of human activity. Roman-era summer averages reached heights that provided the agricultural stability necessary for imperial expansion. Life thrived across the Northern Hemisphere, where temperatures reached 1°C to 2°C higher than today. Similar regional warm currents during the Roman Warm Period (250 BC to AD 400) - and Medieval Warm Period (1,100 to 1,300 AD) - allowed agriculture to flourish in the Mediterranean and enabled Norse settlements in green Greenland. These eras contrast sharply with the Little Ice Age (1,300 to 1,850 AD), a period of severe polar cooling and glacial expansion triggered by volcanic clusters and solar minimums, demonstrating that cold—not warmth—historically brought hardship. Looking further back to the Eemian Interglacial (130,000 to 115,000 years ago), global averages were also roughly 1°C to 2°C warmer than today, with high-latitude spikes of 4°C to 8°C. This natural warmth caused significant polar melt and raised sea levels by 6 to 9 metres. Crucially, Eemian atmospheric CO₂ remained stable at roughly 285 ppm. The planet’s most profound warming intervals were driven by natural orbital mechanics, while CO₂ remained low and stable. These periods occurred under lower atmospheric carbon dioxide levels, and driven primarily by Milankovitch orbital cycles. The current warm Holocene interglacial period, beginning roughly 11,700 years ago, features many prominent climate fluctuations. In 1995, 77.1% of global primary energy was provided by fossil fuels. As of 2024 (the latest data I could find), 76.4% still comes from fossil fuels. That's a whopping *sarc* 0.7 percentage point drop in 30 years. Governments have spent TRILLIONS of taxpayer dollars on “green” energy projects, and while growth in renewables has been enormous (particularly solar), it has barely made a dent in the global energy mix (note, these figures are based on the substitution method for fair cross-comparison, so it slightly lowers fossil fuels) because coal, oil, and natural gas consumption continue to increase year after year. If eco nuts like you actually wanted to “decarbonize” the economy, then a deregulation of and transition to nuclear fission would achieve that far faster.

4/4 1. Ireland Can Become the Bridge Between the U.S. and a Fragmenting Europe The U.S. laments European decline and ideological stability. Ireland can position itself as: ❁ a trusted transatlantic interlocutor ❁ a neutral, English-speaking, common-law gateway ❁ a country less trapped in Brussels’ ideological narratives (we need to drop gender, climate, censorship, migration, etc.) ❁ a country ready to embrace the new multipolar geopolitical reality This will require political and diplomatic elites to discard the ‘best boy in class’ routine. It means cutting dependencies with supranational agencies. It means dropping our commitment to achieving the SDGs and restoring Representative Democracy instead of the Stakeholder Capitalism system which reigns today. Ministers should regain lost powers and Accountability should become *the* defining value of all Government departments. No more corruption, no more funding for activist NGOs and no more membership of the WEF for cabinet members or politicians. As Europe’s internal legitimacy collapses, Washington will look for reliable, culturally aligned partners inside the EU. Ireland can fill that vacuum if it distances itself from EU maximalism. Pushing a United Ireland that embodies these proposals can be a powerful sovereigntist symbol. 2. The New Industrial Strategy fits Ireland’s model. The NSS prioritises: ❁ reshoring ❁ technology hubs ❁ energy abundance ❁ critical infrastructure ❁ supply-chain resilience Ireland, with its existing tech base and potential for modular data/AI infrastructure, can therefore pitch itself as: ❁ America’s European platform for the new industrial age ❁ a hub for secure data storage, chip packaging, energy innovation and AI safety standards 3. Ireland Can Reassert and Monetise Neutrality As the U.S. forces Europe to shoulder its own defence and ends the enlargement of NATO, Ireland’s neutrality becomes: ❁ a diplomatic asset ❁ a mediation tool ❁ a branding advantage ❁ a potential host for peace/security summits ❁ a safe proximate venue for transatlantic dialogue outside EU/NATO ideological pressure a diplomatic asset The NSS criticises EU censorship, over-regulation, demographic decline and loss of confidence. Ireland can position itself as reflecting the opposite: ❁ a sovereign, open, innovative small state ❁ culturally sovereign ❁ resisting technocratic homogenisation ❁ embracing free speech and civil liberties (rather than trampling them) ❁ focusing on economic dynamism over bureaucracy All of this aligns with U.S. thinking and differentiates Ireland within Europe. The NSS puts sovereignty, industrial capacity and strategic neutrality back at the centre of global politics. That plays directly to Ireland’s latent strengths….if we have the self-belief, political leadership and bravery to use them.

IPCC scientists have officially labeled the long-standing 5.5C warming trajectory by 2100 as 'implausible'. The old narrative—'We are on track for a 5C apocalypse if we don't immediately upend the global economy'—is dead. Removing these extreme scenarios represents a massive victory for data-driven reality, but it creates a distinct institutional challenge for a climate bureaucracy that has spent 25 years leveraging fear. The scientific community has now acknowledged that these catastrophic, upper-end predictions were built on flawed, outdated economic models. Crucially, early modelers failed to account for real-world market trends over the last 15 years, including a sharp flattening of global coal expansion and massive drops in renewable energy costs. First made available in 2011 to drive global climate policy, this extreme scenario—known widely as RCP8.5 (and later SSP5-8.5)—served as the primary engine for the media's terrifying 'business-as-usual' headlines for over a decade. It was built on the bizarre assumption that humanity would aggressively abandon clean tech, undergo an unprecedented five-fold increase in coal use, and even resort to converting coal to oil to run vehicles. Those apocalyptic projections simply didn't occur. Today, traditional fossil fuels still provide roughly 81% of global primary energy, yet emissions have structurally flattened. With the retirement of the extreme 5C baseline for the upcoming 7th Assessment Report (AR7), the ceiling for projected global warming has dropped significantly. The newly proposed high-emissions baseline has been downgraded to a maximum of 3.3C by 2100. But under current, real-world policy pathways, the world is actually tracking toward a median of 2.6C to 3C. The climate narrative has now officially shifted from an existential struggle of 'apocalypse versus survival' to a standard problem of risk management.
