Geto Boys, 1990. Before hip hop became the biggest music genre in the world, there were artists using it to tell stories that many Americans preferred to ignore. Few groups did that more powerfully than the Geto Boys. Formed in Houston, Texas during the late 1980s, the Geto Boys helped put Southern hip hop on the map at a time when New York and Los Angeles dominated the conversation. The group's best known lineup featured Scarface, Willie D, and Bushwick Bill, three artists with very different personalities who came together to create music that was raw, emotional, and impossible to overlook. Their lyrics explored life in neighborhoods affected by poverty, crime, addiction, racism, police violence, and mental health struggles. While some of their songs sparked controversy because of their graphic content, others revealed a depth that challenged stereotypes about rap music. Scarface in particular became known for writing deeply personal verses about depression, paranoia, trauma, and the emotional weight of growing up surrounded by violence. Long before conversations about mental health became common, he was putting those feelings into his music. One of the group's most influential songs, "Mind Playing Tricks on Me," released in 1991, remains one of hip hop's greatest storytelling records. Instead of celebrating violence, it explored fear, anxiety, and psychological stress in a way that was rarely heard in mainstream music. The song has since inspired generations of rappers and is often recognized as one of the greatest hip hop tracks ever recorded. The Geto Boys also changed the music industry by proving that successful rap did not have to come from the East or West Coast. Their success opened doors for Houston's music scene and helped pave the way for artists across the South. Today, the influence of Southern hip hop can be heard everywhere, from Atlanta to Memphis, New Orleans, and beyond. Groups like the Geto Boys helped make that possible. Like many influential artists, their legacy is complicated. They faced criticism, censorship, and public backlash, yet they also created music that documented the realities of communities that were often ignored by mainstream America. Whether people agreed with every lyric or not, their impact on hip hop history is undeniable.
