Hi, I work in real estate development. This is insane. Yes, most projects are struggling. No, taxpayers should not be used to backstop private developers who misjudged the market. If government wants more housing, build housing. Build it at cost. That would be bad for my industry, but good public policy isn’t supposed to protect our profits, it’s supposed to serve Canadians.

The University Avenue bike lanes (implemented in 2020) were specially designed and purposefully constructed to perform this same life-saving function. They're wide enough to accommodate emergency vehicles, providing a protected, gridlock-free route along Hospital Row.
Without midtown bike lanes, emergency vehicles would have been completely unable to move last night.

People who value nothing but money and success can only see jealousy over money and success when in fact, the motivating factor for the criticism might be the impact on vulnerable populations this man has facilitated. $200 million on a parking garage on Toronto’s waterfront will not age well. Just like funnelling cars into the core has not aged well. By the early 2030s, Exhibition Place will have one of the best transit connections in the country, with subway service to downtown, the east end, links into the entire GO rail network, and the waterfront streetcar network. It’s designed to be a major hub. Scotiabank Arena is a regional destination on GO Transit, and revellers arrive by walking, cycling and taking transit. They get to the Rogers Centre the same way. The only reason this works is because our streets on game days are a sea of people, rather than a sea of cars. That’s not an accident. It’s the result of good urban planning. So why are we spending a small fortune to create a traffic mess at Exhibition Place, when the overwhelming majority of people will still arrive by transit? When we invest in transit, people take transit. When we invest in parking, we get more traffic.

Congratulations to the Ford Government and the people of Ontario for spending too much tax payer money on something completely unnecessary that will further destroy the waterfront. Im sure this is exactly what the people in Sudbury have been asking Ford to spend their money on.
$56.5k per spot to build a monstrosity that will largely sit empty because driving to Ontario Place has always been a nightmare which is solved purely by having better transit in the area.
