@MrMetacognition Whatever behaviour you focus on .. is the behaviour you will get .. psychology 1on1 .. if schools focused on building children up and finding positivity in every child’s actions .. mental health , learning and behaviour would improve
We’re extremely disappointed with Sunak’s harmful and inaccurate comments on mental health and work. Read our response to Sunak’s call to end ‘sick note culture’ ➡️ orlo.uk/XBJLx
@MichelleRostron @naomicfisher No1 says u go out the way2 humiliate YP!!! however as stated my son kept on red infront of whole class 4years 4maths & reading despite dyslexica & dyscalcula! I supervise Highsch teachers &pastoral who struggle with targets v holistic care with no MH training or support #maslow
@MissKhan__ @naomicfisher Ok ?? 😂😂
@MichelleRostron @naomicfisher In this day and age tho - you would hope there would be at least 1 module in teacher training on how to raise self esteem and understand and support MH - which will I turn achieve better results ! #maslowsheirachyofneed
@MissKhan__ @naomicfisher I’m sure she works in schools and sch children with MH - as do I - I have worked within the system for 20+ years,many different schools - and all I can say is - it’s getting worse ! Teachers r not taught MH when 1 in 5 YP suffer / no understanding of SEN/ND - all about targets
@naomicfisher My son was always on ‘ red’ traffic light …. for reading and maths - for the whole class to see - he has dyscalculia and dyslexia and extremely low self esteem now as a result … as an adult .. it really doesn’t take a genius to work out how damaging this is !
This is great resource for coaches, educators, parents and so many more. @Ratt_Ray @JonHorner @meganabartlett recommend sharing with all ages. Great way to engage youth with developmental adversities. @ChildTraumaAcad @NeuroSequential
Here’s a new exploration of our stress response, mechanisms mediating our emotional health, and the potential for sport and activity to play a therapeutic role. Thanks to @BDPerry @CHJSorg #pushtoheal Hope it helps. ybos.nikesb.com/ybos-running
Recently I talked to a young person who told me about starting secondary school. We were lined up, she said, and our uniform was inspected. I had never been in trouble at primary school but they said my shoes were wrong. There was a coloured stitch around the heel. She got a warning that first day, and told that the next day the same shoes would mean a short detention. There was no time or money to buy new shoes before the next day so back she went with the same shoes and duly got a 30 min detention. She tried to explain but was told there were no excuses. Next day it was the same. Still no time or money to buy new shoes so she wore her black trainers and hoped they wouldn't notice. They did. Also not allowed. She got angry when given another detention - it’s unfair! - and she told the teacher so loudly and tearfully. This was disrespectful behaviour and so her sanction was increased. More behaviour points and she’s heading for Reset. She still can’t get new shoes. What exactly are those sanctions meant to be correcting? Where is the ‘misbehaviour’ which will be changed by ‘consequences’? Was it buying those shoes in the first place - not really her mistake, since she’s 11? Or was it not having money to buy new ones? Or having parents who work hours which means they can’t shop during the week? Or not quietly accepting the sanctions? What is she meant to be learning from the experience? I can tell you what she did learn because she told me. She learnt that she hates getting detentions and that she doesn't think the teachers like her. She learnt that school cares more about the threading on her shoes than about her education and learning. She started telling her parents she won't go. That’s seen as more ‘behaviour’ and her parents are told to put sanctions in place at home. Pretty soon she's very unhappy - but that still doesn't change the threads on her shoes. That’s the problem when we make sweeping statements about ‘behaviour’ which fail to ask questions about what is going on. What we see as ‘misbehaviour’ is dependent on the context. If by 'behaviour' we really mean 'compliance' then we should call it that. Learning to comply isn't the same as learning to behave. That's because behaviour is about much more than compliance. Behaviour is the result of an interaction between the person and their environment. If we ignore the role of the environment, we can make things worse.
Several people have contacted me with job adverts for pastoral assistants and other support staff in academy schools. These adverts state that applicants must believe that ‘letting them off is letting them down’, in ‘excellence through habits’ and that a significant part of the job is ‘supporting the running’ of reset and detention rooms. The definition of pastoral care is the provision which schools make to support the emotional and physical wellbeing of its pupils. How has this been redefined as running rooms to isolate and punish them?
@naomicfisher Unfortunately its common aswell as SEN YP being peaniised &excluded 4not being able 2 do work or stay in class.I have worked in primary &high &now work In CAMHS dealing with this all day. I feel the system is worse than ever due 2 nofunding,no TAs no training & private academies
Why won’t I just stay in my lane, stop talking about our school system and get on with treating mental health problems? Because every day I hear about practices in schools which cause distress - and I’m being asked to resolve the distress as if it, not the practice, is the problem. I’m being asked to be complicit in practices which are damaging to young people’s well-being. I’m being asked to tell young people that the problem is them, that they’re wrong to feel the way they do and with a bit of therapy they can go back to the unchanged system. I’m being asked to tell them that the system is right and they are wrong. What practices, you ask? Putting young people into isolation for haircuts, or nose piercings. Instant detentions for minor uniform transgressions. Young people who have struggled into school being greeted with a behaviour point because they were three minutes late, and then another behaviour point for not taking their coat off immediately. Children who have had a very difficult term ending it off with being excluded from the school trip due to poor attendance. I hear these stories from multiple families, all over the UK. There’s nothing wrong with people who feel distressed and anxious when they are in a system which creates distress and anxiety. Our children aren’t the problem, they are pointing out the problem.
Trying to find some words when words fail. Thank you @aaronjmate @MaxBlumenthal @TheGrayzoneNews for inviting me on.

Homework needs to go. It was grand in the 80's 😂🤦 but family life is different now. Parents working full time and/or not having 2 parents in the 1 house. It causes nothing but upset. Think I'll start a revolution....don't make your kids do homework who's with me? Load of 💩
