Yesterday was an absolute whirlwind for me. Around 9:45 a.m., I got a call at work from the athletic trainer at Ogden High School letting me know that my youngest daughter had hit her head during cheer practice and suffered a concussion. We have six children—three boys and three girls—but our youngest daughter is currently the only one still living at home. My wife is currently in Kansas with our oldest daughter, who was expecting a baby any day, so I was flying solo. Thankfully, my oldest son was working from home and was able to pick up his youngest sister from Ogden High while I finished a few must-do tasks at work before heading home from downtown Salt Lake City. Then, at 11:00 a.m., I got a call at work from my 83-year-old mother-in-law. Her basement had recently flooded, and workers were in the middle of tearing out damaged walls and flooring. To make matters worse, the power had gone out, and she wanted help locating the breaker panels. Her home has three different electrical panels from various remodels over the years, so things weren't exactly straightforward. After making a few calls to neighbors, I learned that the entire neighborhood was without power because of a fire in South Ogden. Since our home is only a block away from my mother-in-law's, we were without power as well. With no air conditioning and temperatures climbing, she was understandably concerned and wanted a ride to my oldest son's house. Unfortunately, he was already caring for his youngest sister, who was asleep and recovering from her concussion. Not long after that, my oldest son—who lives in Washington Terrace, near where the fire was actually burning—received word that his neighborhood might need to evacuate. By the time I arrived at his home, there was a massive wall of smoke visible along the Weber River. I picked up my youngest daughter while my oldest son and daughter-in-law waited for updates on the potential evacuation. Since my youngest daughter had been instructed to avoid screens and take it easy, we made a stop to pick up sunglasses and coloring books to help pass the time. Fortunately, by the time we got home, the power had been restored. I made sure my mother-in-law was comfortable and had everything she needed. The day still wasn't over. Around 9:00 p.m. my oldest daughter was admitted to the hospital in Kansas. Early this morning, she gave birth to her third child, a healthy baby girl. Our new granddaughter arrived at 5:05 a.m., weighing 7 pounds, 1 ounce, and measuring 21 inches long. The fire is almost completely contained and my oldest son did not need to evacuate. So that was Day One of being "Mr. Mom" while my wife is away. Now my focus is helping my youngest daughter recover. She has no cheerleading until she sees the doctor on Thursday morning, is limited to light foods, and has been told to avoid screens completely. It may be a long couple of days, but after everything that happened yesterday—a concussion, a flooded basement, a power outage, a wildfire, possible evacuations, and the arrival of a new granddaughter—I'm grateful that everyone is safe. And despite all the chaos, I'm thrilled to be a grandpa again. ❤️👶🏼🏒
