Because Selleck had already gone through a painful divorce with his first wife, Jacqueline Ray—whose son, Kevin, he adopted and remains very close to—he wanted to protect this new relationship from the paparazzi at all costs. On August 7, 1987, the couple got married in absolute secrecy at a 24-hour wedding chapel in Lake Tahoe, Nevada. To avoid the press, they used the fake names "Tom Jenkins" and "Suzy Mark." The reverend performing the ceremony did not even know the groom's real identity until minutes before it started. Selleck even banned professional cameras, allowing only Polaroid photos so the negatives could not be stolen or sold to tabloids. When their daughter Hannah arrived, Selleck put his words into action and bought a 65-acre ranch in Ventura County, California, which used to belong to Dean Martin and featured a massive avocado farm. He wanted his daughter to grow up surrounded by nature, far away from the toxic celebrity environment, and he wanted to work on his marriage every single day. Today, Tom and Jillie have been married for nearly forty years, which is an absolute miracle by modern standards. Their secret comes down to simple daily habits.
