Yes, I've also seen this raised elsewhere and have mentioned it myself. If any singular nation wants out of FIFA, they can, but it's a process they would have to trigger, and would be done individually by each nation. Also, with the 55 members of UEFA who released a statement in alignment, if push does come to shove, it will be interesting to see if all 55 actually move forward and submit paperwork to leave. I have no doubt the major nations would, but I do question if smaller nations would. It's always easy to threaten things and release statements and press releases, but actually going through with it is often more complex.

CONCACAF said it was "concerned" about the process, but it didn't say (yet) it was openly opposed. CONCACAF is also made up of 41 national associations. The U.S., Mexico, and Canada, and a handful of others could oppose and still be in a tiny minority of CONCACAF voting, which could vote in favor, and it's what Infantino is likely betting on. It's the same with AFC. Australia and a few others could vote against it, but AFC has 47 members, most of whom already openly support Infantino.

@tombogert I think it's easy for UEFA to publish a statement, but UEFA has 55 national associations, and it's my understanding that all 55 national associations, individually, would have to begin their own process to leave FIFA. Do you know if that's correct?

I'm curious where you got the $500M/year, because the data I've seen says that number is off by roughly 8x. Miami-Fort Lauderdale metro area startups raised $4.13 billion across 376 deals in 2025, per the eMerge Insights Florida Venture Capital Report (built on PitchBook, CB Insights, and Crunchbase data), up 49% over 2024. And Brickell isn't bank-less. Itau alone manages roughly $24B in wealth out of its Miami office, alongside JPMorgan, Morgan Stanley, and Bradesco running their own Latin American private banking units there. This also doesn't factor in the hundreds of funds and family offices that have relocated or expanded operations across South Florida. None of this claims Miami's economy has passed Chicago's, or that Chicago lacks institutional banking gravitas. But it's also not right to undersell that Miami is absolutely a city with momentum and a place where ambitious people and capital are choosing to concentrate right now for a myriad of reasons.

Chicago 100% has a deeper, more authentic culture than Nashville or Austin. That’s not really in dispute. Architecture, music history, food, institutions, urban neighborhoods with actual texture. Chicago is top notch in these categories. The original point of Perell’s post was more about prominence, a loss of momentum, and why the national cultural and economic spotlight moved toward cities that feel higher-ambition and higher-variance right now, even if some of that energy is newer and less rooted. Chicago can have superior cultural depth and still lose relative mindshare when the growth, talent, and capital flows go elsewhere. Those two things aren’t mutually exclusive and long-term they will have serious casual effects if unaddressed for too long. The “artificial millennial influx” critique has some truth to it, but cities that attract ambitious people who are “builders” tend to generate the next wave of culture, companies, and status. So, Nashville + Austin + Miami might be artificial today, but come to dominate culture and business 50 years from now.

@MCCCANM Southwest will have to implement its own version of first if it wants to compete for those customers. It's just a matter of time.

@JohnBuschVI @david_perell This is excellent. I sure do hope new leadership helps, but I worry the only way that candidates can win elections now is to get union support (the easier path) or build a coalition that can beat a candidate backed by the unions (the harder path).

Crime has gotten better, but it's more visible now, and the soft-on-crime leadership doesn't help. For example, murders are down compared to the 1990s, but when anyone can pull up videos showing people getting stabbed on the CTA or regular shootings in the core business and restaurant districts in broad daylight, and the only real response from leadership is "we need more community violence intervention workers," it's a massive problem.

Friends in business who “avoid politics”, instead of studying and doing their civic duty to fight as best they can for the principles of our civilization that enable their lives and work.

We need an MLS team that stars with AFC. It would be better than “Real” or “Union” or “Inter.” It would also be better in most situations than just FC because the official name of soccer is association football.

I think this is what AI will take from us, knowledge like this, the ability to converse like this on topics that you have deep knowledge of, because why bother spending years deepening your understanding of something when you can just ask AI to spew it out for you. And most of our conversations of length these days are done over typed message. No one really has these type of conversations face to face anymore. When was the last time you really chewed it out on a topic with a friend irl?

So long, America🫡🇺🇸 49 days ago we landed in the USA to follow our country at the World Cup. We had no idea it would turn into the trip of a lifetime. Thank you to everyone who followed along, and to all the people we met who made this journey even more special. We honestly don’t have the words to express how grateful we are for everything you did for us. This trip exceeded every expectation we had. We came here with an open mind, wanting to experience as much of the country as possible. I still remember telling my friends on the flight to Atlanta that I hoped we’d get to meet a few locals on this trip. Now we’re flying home with friends all across the USA. Before we came, we heard so many stereotypes and warnings about America. People told us about safety concerns, that they might check our social media at the border, and all kinds of other things. None of it matched our experience. This was probably the most welcoming country we’ve ever visited. So if you have the chance to travel, do it. The world isn’t nearly as bad as the media often makes it seem. 99% of people are awesome! I heard this quote somewhere during the World Cup, and I think it sums up our experience perfectly: “If you want to hate the world, watch the news. If you want to love it, travel it.” Thank you, America ❤️🇺🇸
