Ukrainian attack drones struck another dozen Russian oil/fuel tankers off Crimea overnight. The Russian Navy has so far been incapable of stopping the attacks at sea, with nearly 40 vessels hit in the last 96 hours.

On 4 July, Russia put a single radar plane over Votkinsk. It changed everything for five incoming Ukrainian missiles. The A-50U's radar, mounted high above the four-engine jet, caught all five Flamingos as they skimmed through river valleys to dodge ground radar. The Russians shot down every one. But Russia may have only five of these planes left—no replacement in development. Ukraine may have hit more than half the fleet since 2022. Unique footage of the Auchan Operation—a brilliant asymmetric strike where tech and precision planning halted a Russian mechanized offensive for 6 months. This deep-rear operation struck 949 targets in just 3 days, forcing Russia to withdraw heavy armor. Recently, we repeated the operation with a newly developed munition specifically targeting enemy artillery, hitting another 231 targets. Across both phases, 1,180 enemy targets were hit. I was recently asked to give some advice to a newly graduated CompSci major who was struggling to find a job. I don't know if the advice I gave him was good, but I'll repeat it here in case it's helpful (presented here in rough order of usefulness). 1. Focus on getting a job, not your dream job. Getting your second job after working in industry is immeasurably easier than getting your first. Most of the jobs I've gotten have been helped along by the personal relationships I've built with co-workers. 2. Look for technical roles at non-technical companies. There is a huge long tail of specialized companies with bespoke processes that can be accelerated with AI, that have historically been underserved by poor quality SAAS vendors. 3. Get good at infrastructure. Even companies that are all-in on AI for development tend to keep humans in the loop for the last mile of deployment, and it's a highly transferrable skill. 4. Interview a lot, even with companies you aren't really interested in. Interviewing is a learned skill that is completely distinct from day-to-day software development, but one that that can be improved with practice. It will also help you improve your soft skills, which are as important to success as technical acumen. 5. If you can, find companies that use take home projects as part of the interview process. Many people are unwilling to do what they consider "unpaid work" (particularly if they already have a job), and so this is a place where persistence and hard work can give you an edge, and one of the few places where being an unemployed new grad with lots of time is actually an advantage.

This guy bought Samsung’s 990 Pro 4 TB SSD when it was ~$330 and now Samsung REFUSES to replace it as the SSD now costs ~$950 due to the AI boom. The SSD came with a 5-year warranty but started malfunctioning after just one year. He sent Samsung evidence showing the drive was malfunctioning. Samsung rejected his claim, said it was working fine, and mailed it back to him. When asked for a replacement, Samsung said the SSD was “out of stock” and couldn’t be replaced, offering only a refund of the original ~$330 purchase price. The problem? The same SSD is currently IN STOCK and selling for around $950, so the refund wouldn’t even buy a replacement. He’s now taking legal action against Samsung. At this point, replacing the SSD would’ve probably been cheaper for Samsung than fighting the lawsuit. 😭

if i had to guess the “secret sauce” of Fable i’d say it’s these 3 things: 1) scale - this model is has the most “big model smell” imaginable. it contains worlds, so it can go really deep on anything 2) Extreme agentic RL - fable is a workhorse, it just chugs and chugs and never seems to get lost, looped, or lazy. this implies that anthropic has cracked the formula for long horizon agentic RL and has scaled it up as far as they can. 3) The constitution - i’ve always loved Claude’s constitution not just as a safety guideline or product vision, but as a clear materialization of how to understand and evaluate the model’s behavior from data to training tasks to reward models to evals. Training a model is the culmination of thousands of decisions, and it’s much easier if there’s a constitution guiding those choices (both by humans and AI) all in all Fable is the most impressive piece of technology i’ve ever seen. bravo to the @AnthropicAI team, they’ve created something truly special and it’s a testament to their talent, vision, and focus

here’s a little known secret: software was always slop, long before llms. software engineers are way to fucking prideful of the text they put on a screen to admit this.

Unfortunately no matter how judicious I am, no matter how much I review the code, it feels impossible to not let the slop slip in. I feel like you can prevent it from overflowing, but without your hands getting dirty, you don't really know the state of the project.

On Tuesday, June 30th, Jennifer Gibbons, Vice President of State Government Affairs for ESA (Entertainment Software Association) testified before the United States California Senate regarding Minecraft and Call of Duty private servers, which she claims are actually piracy. Gibbons told the California Senate these private servers are unsanctioned. She is representing the video game industry in the United States and vehemently opposes the recently introduced Protect Our Games Act, the United States version of Stop Killing Games. She referred to Minecraft private servers as "The Black Market".

In an ominous development, a Russian “Molniya” strike UAV was equipped with only a camera and a computing module, without any means of radio communication. Such full autonomy with terrain-following capability had previously been observed only on the “V2U” UAV.
