⭕️ Journalist Courtney Bonneau reports Israeli forces have built a large new military base atop the ruins of the historic Al-Khiam Detention Center in southern Lebanon. Bonneau said she filmed Israeli excavators demolishing the remaining structures at the site on March 26. New footage and satellite imagery now show a fortified Israeli position occupying the hilltop where the former prison once stood. The prison in the Marjayoun District, just a few kilometers north of the Israeli border, was originally a French military barracks. It was operated by the Israeli-backed South Lebanon Army during Israel’s occupation of southern Lebanon. Former detainees and human rights organizations documented torture and other abuses there. After Israel’s withdrawal in 2000, it was preserved as a museum before being heavily damaged in the 2006 war. The remaining ruins were demolished during this year’s fighting.
