On Kodai Senga, Carlos Mendoza pointed out that David Stearns was clear pregame about performance mattering in the starting rotation. “Having outings like this is not gonna cut it. … that ain’t gonna do it. We need better.” Mendoza added that he expects the Mets will have some “deep conversations” soon to figure out what’s next with Senga and his spot in the rotation.

The Mets scored three in the ninth, but it wasn't enough to overcome another brutal showing in the early innings. Kodai Senga gave up seven earned runs and took the loss. He's now 0-6 with a 10.08 ERA on the season. Juan Soto exited the game with "left side back tightness" in what could be a nightmare. We'll get an update on him shortly. With their loss tonight, the Mets are back to 10 games below .500 again. They're 34-44.

This was where Kodai Senga's two-strike slider to No. 9 hitter Dansby Swanson ended up. Swanson crushed it out to left for a two-run homer. Senga has allowed seven earned runs tonight in 3.1 innings with five walks and counting. Not much else to say...

"I think each of our starters would say that there's another level of performance in there. Kodai Senga in the first inning: 3 up, 3 down. 2 strikeouts. Fastball hit 99 mph. Kodai Senga in the second inning: 5 earned runs. 2 BB, 1 HBP and a 3-run homer from PCA. Fastball topped out at 97.1 mph ... was down to 94.2. He either fell behind or couldn't put hitters away.

A lot to like for the Mets in their series-opening win over the Phillies tonight Another encouraging start from Manaea when the Mets are desperate for arms to step up in the rotation Soto is Soto (two more HR) Bullpen was lights out again tonight: Brazoban + Minter + Weaver + Williams. Bichette's bad throw in the 9th led to a run charged to Williams (and a stressful Schwarber at-bat), but that definitely should've been an error and an unearned run Five hits between Benge and Ewing Clutch hitting from Wagaman and Semien in the 7th New York is 3-1 against the Phillies and Braves so far during this pivotal stretch of their schedule ... but 2-4 against STL and Cincinnati

Carlos Mendoza played the righty-lefty game with his bench facing Jose Alvarado with two outs in the seventh ... and it worked. Mark Vientos walked, hitting for Jared Young. Eric Wagaman drove a go-ahead single to right, hitting for A.J. Ewing. Ewing had two hits tonight and you're subtracting his defense in the outfield, so that's risky decision there. But Wagaman got the job done and the Mets are in front.

Was fitting that Sean Manaea's outing ended with a swinging strikeout on a sweeper. He had that pitch working tonight against lefties ... 11 whiffs on the sweeper and 16 whiffs overall for him. Another solid outing. Only one walk. Manaea does exit in a tie ballgame at 3-3, though. Schwarber reaching on the dropped third strike hurt in the third — he ended up scoring on a double off Benge's glove in the corner.
