⚡️Chamath is pointing at a real problem with a weak measurement method. The real problem is that most companies have not converted AI usage into visible operating leverage yet. They have added copilots, token spend, pilots, summaries, coding tools, support tools, internal search, and agent experiments. The org chart is mostly intact. The approval structure is intact. The meeting load is intact. The handoffs are intact. The headcount base is mostly intact. So the economic output remains small even while the AI activity explodes. That part is real. The weak part is claiming the “true ROI” is 0% to 2% by subtracting Nvidia and looking at aggregate S&P 493 EPS growth. That does not isolate AI. Aggregate EPS is polluted by pricing, buybacks, margins, cyclicality, energy, rates, labor costs, taxes, sector mix, and capital spending. AI benefits can show up as avoided hiring, faster product cycles, lower error rates, better retention, stronger conversion, and work that never appears as a clean EPS line item yet. The 0% to 2% number is more rhetorical compression than measured fact. But the direction is still right. The AI boom is currently producing enormous supplier revenue and much weaker downstream customer economics. That is the hidden split. Chips, cloud, data centers, power, networking, and model providers monetize immediately. The enterprise buyer pays now and discovers later whether the workflow changed enough to justify the spend. That creates a temporary transfer of economic value from AI users to AI infrastructure owners. The deeper pattern is that companies are buying intelligence before learning how to reorganize around intelligence. That almost always produces disappointing early ROI. A company can give every employee an AI tool and still get nearly nothing if every generated output flows into the same bureaucracy. Ten times more drafts do not matter if approvals take three weeks. Faster code does not matter if deployment is blocked. Better analysis does not matter if managers ignore it. More customer-service automation does not matter if exceptions still require the same human escalation chain. The scarce asset is no longer access to AI. The scarce asset is organizational willingness to remove work. That means the next phase will be violent. Boards and CFOs will start asking which token spend produced revenue, reduced labor, shortened cycle time, or improved margins. Decorative AI budgets will get cut. Redundant vendors will get consolidated. Pilots without economic conversion will die. Employees using AI to make more internal content will stop being counted as productivity. The winners will rebuild the operating model. They will remove steps. Remove approvals. Remove handoffs. Remove roles. Compress management layers. Turn agents into persistent execution capacity. The losers will keep every person, every process, every meeting, every approval chain, and add AI subscriptions on top. That is why the current ROI can look terrible without invalidating the technology. The technology is powerful. The implementation is cowardly. The prelanguage signal is this: The first AI bubble is concentrated in spend. The second AI wave will be concentrated in labor displacement and process deletion. Once companies stop using AI to assist the old machine and start using it to dismantle the old machine, the ROI will jump abruptly. That is also when the social pain begins. Right now, the infrastructure owners are getting rich while the enterprise buyer experiments. The reckoning arrives when the buyer finally demands economic conversion.

Pensioners demand higher benefits. Students demand free tuition. Corporations demand bailouts and protection from competition. Instead of producing value through trade and innovation, people invest time and resources in political activity designed to redistribute existing wealth. The result is not greater prosperity, but higher taxes, expanding bureaucracy and a culture of dependency, victimhood and resentment. The state transforms society into a zero-sum game. When everyone is encouraged to view government as a source of unearned benefits, the moral and practical foundations of a free society are steadily undermined. The fiction eventually collapses under the weight of its own contradictions.

Your median professor sits so far left that AOC, Sanders, and Warren would count as moderates in any faculty lounge. Faculty from 55 elite universities form one towering blue spike of ideology far out on the left, density exploding past 6, with virtually nothing on the conservative side. This was built through decades of selective hiring, social enforcement, and the systematic purge of dissent.
