Day 53/182 of Ethical Hacking Internship at ICDFA I continued my Network Defence and Traffic Analysis course by studying Windows Network Architecture and the OSI Model. Focusing on how Windows networking components and drivers implement the four lower layers of the OSI model: I. Physical Layer Understanding how physical network hardware and signals provide the foundation for communication. II. Data Link Layer I learned that the IEEE divides this layer into two sublayers: a. MAC (Media Access Control) – Responsible for addressing and access to the physical network medium. b. LLC (Logical Link Control) – Provides logical communication and coordination between the network layer and the MAC sublayer. III. Network Layer Focused on logical addressing and routing, particularly how IP enables packets to travel between different networks. IX. Transport Layer Explored how protocols such as TCP and UDP provide communication between applications, including concepts such as reliability, segmentation, and ports. One thing I've learned during this journey is that consistency isn't about never missing a day it's about returning with renewed focus and determination. This course will strengthen my understanding of how networks operate and how to defend them against cyber threats. Today's topics included: The Connected Globe - Understanding how billions of devices communicate across the internet. - Exploring the role of networks in enabling global connectivity. The Net: How Things Connect - Learning the fundamentals of network communication. - Understanding how data travels between devices and across networks. Introduction to Networking Devices - Exploring the functions of routers, switches, hubs, firewalls, access points, and other networking devices. - Understanding how each device contributes to a secure and reliable network. Area Networks and Network Topologies - Learning the differences between LAN, WAN, MAN, and PAN. - Studying common network topologies such as star, bus, ring, mesh, and tree, along with their advantages and use cases. Starting this new course reminds me that a solid understanding of networking is the foundation of cybersecurity. Day 42–43/182 of Ethical Hacking Internship at ICDF Over the past two days, I worked on the End-of-Course Practical Capstone Project for CIP-A102: Linux Fundamentals II. This capstone challenged me to bring together everything I learned throughout the course by building a read-only Linux Operations Audit Script. The script was designed to audit and report on: ✅ System identity ✅ Time synchronization status ✅ Failed services ✅ Listening network sockets ✅ Disk usage ✅ Pending system updates ✅ Firewall status ✅ Recent high-priority system logs In addition, the project required the script to: Generate both text and CSV reports Support an --output option for saving reports to a specified directory Return meaningful exit codes Include a README with verification and rollback notes Follow a read-only approach without making automatic security changes This capstone was more than just a scripting exercise it was an opportunity to combine Linux administration, automation, troubleshooting, and security concepts into a practical solution. It reinforced the importance of writing scripts that are not only functional but also safe, well-documented, and maintainable. Completing this project marks the successful conclusion of Linux Fundamentals II (CIP-A102). I'm grateful for the knowledge and hands-on experience gained throughout the course, and I'm excited to apply these skills as I continue my cybersecurity journey.
