@PriyamvadaGopal I'm curious. Because I see this in my sector too. What can be done to change that if you are (seemingly) the only person on that committee who thinks and knows how messed up it is? Others agree it's wrong, but don't seem to care it's wrong. How do I change that?

The extensive comparisons, the two papers already corrected, the defamation firm used to kill a Times Higher Education investigation, and Cambridge's indefensible refusal to commission an independent inquiry all speak for themselves. None of that is in dispute here. The question is what explains it. DEI is the "answer" being offered. So test it. William O'Reilly is Associate Professor in Early Modern History at Cambridge this morning. In February 2023 a University tribunal upheld a complaint that he had lifted more than twelve pages, close to half an article, from two essays by an undergraduate he supervised, whose originals carried his own handwritten notes of praise. Cambridge policy calls plagiarism gross misconduct that will normally merit dismissal. The tribunal called it negligent rather than deliberate. The journal pulled the article. He was cleared at the disciplinary hearing and remained Master of Birkbeck. The mechanism is in the sector's own audit. In 2023/24, 115 UK institutions recorded 228 misconduct allegations between them, and 45% recorded none at all. Formal investigations have fallen from 65% of allegations in 2019/20 to 46%. Plagiarism is the largest single category. In the entire dataset, the only cases where consequences were described in any detail involved two research students, one withdrawn before graduating, one whose candidature was terminated over unattributed material in a thesis. ukcori.org/wp-content/upl… There is no national regulator, no body able to check whether a university investigated properly, and UKRIO is advisory with no formal legal powers. Employers mark their own work. Parliament recommended fixing exactly this in 2018, calling it worrying that universities ran so few investigations. British universities are funded on assessed output. Careers are built on volume, and institutional income depends on it. Under that pressure the incentive to publish more than you can properly do is universal, which is why plagiarism is the largest single category of allegation in the sector's own data. Meanwhile a senior academic with grants, rankings value and a public profile is an asset on the books. Arday was a named collaborator on more than $10m of UKRI and NIHR funding. Investigating an asset is a write-down, and no external body exists to force it, so the rational institutional move is not to look. That is why the variable predicting who survives a misconduct finding is seniority and market value, and why Arday is being defended. Class, funding competition and output targets. Unglamorous, and it explains Arday, O'Reilly, Latchman and Manchester with one mechanism. A theory that stops working the moment the accused changes colour is not a theory, it is paparia medoles.

It is representative of how Libya’s migrant detention system is linked to the slave trade. Migrants end up in detention centers where they're taken hostage. The hostage takers then hold them for ransom. If the family doesn't pay, they are auctioned off in a process that is similar to the transatlantic slave trade. Say what you will about Muammar Gaddafi, but this didn't exist before the United States overthrew his government and lynched him in the streets. This happened under President Barack Obama with Hillary Clinton as his Secretary of State. If you ever wanted to know why my work is nonpartisan, it's because of shit like this. If a novel or play is put on the GCSE English syllabus but still in copyright then the government should buy the rights to it and put it in the public domain. Art that's important enough to be taught to teenagers should be freely available to everyone.

I have seen a lot of posts and videos in relation to the new MAFS BBC Panorama documentary, essentially asking why, if women were being mistreated on the show by their partners, they didn’t just leave. I was a police officer for many years, specialising in cases of domestic abuse and abusive patterns of behaviour. I thought we had got past victim blaming in relation to domestic abuse? People don’t leave abusive relationships, even short-term ones, for a variety of reasons. The person is not abusive 100% of the time. When they are kind and compassionate, it can become intoxicating, especially in contrast to when they are awful. This makes victims crave the good parts, and they are conditioned to believe that the bad parts are their fault. This makes them want to “try harder” and “be better” for their abuser, because the good times become the reward. There is also the fact that abusers can be scary, and they can play serious mental games with a victim. The victim literally may not understand that they are being abused. The victim may fear that they will not be believed, or that the abuser will create a smear campaign against them, making them out to be the bad one, and trying to ruin their life and/or reputation. Abusers deny that they have done anything wrong when called out, and are masters at turning the tables on their victims, convincing them that they are the abusers, not them. This is called DARVO: deny, attack, reverse victim and offender. Throw in a reality TV show with cameras, the promise of fame, and the impact of leaving a show and the reputational costs this can have depending on what is aired in your absence, and it creates the perfect scenario for abuse to breed, go unchallenged, and for victims to feel trapped with someone who is hurting them. Instead of asking ‘why don’t they leave?’ we need to ask ‘why does the abuser act like this?’ @Rachel_SUTDA

The first reference to Palestine is on the Egyptian monument of Medinet Habu in 1186BCE. The first reference to Britain is the 4th century BC when it appears in the work of the Greek traveler Pytheas of Massalia.

But the fact that the majority demographic in any UK classical music event is not inclusive says it all. That also boils down to how and where these events are promoted and how they are perceived.
