A Brief History of our Prophet Muhammad (SAW) Prophet Muhammad (SAW) was born in Makkah around 570 CE, into the noble Quraysh tribe, from the family of Banu Hashim. His father, Abdullah, died before his birth, and his mother, Aminah, passed away when he was still a child. He was subsequently cared for by his grandfather, Abdul-Muttalib, and later his uncle, Abu Talib. As a young man, Muhammad (SAW) became known for his honesty, trustworthiness, and excellent character, earning the title Al-Amin (the Trustworthy). At the age of 25, he married Khadijah bint Khuwaylid (RA). At the age of 40, while worshipping in the Cave of Hira near Makkah, he received his first revelation through Angel Jibril (Gabriel). The first verses revealed were from Surah Al-‘Alaq (96:1–5): “Read in the name of your Lord who created…” He then spent approximately 13 years in Makkah calling people to worship Allah alone, abandon idolatry, and uphold justice, mercy, honesty, and good character. He and his followers faced severe persecution. In 622 CE, the Prophet (SAW) and his companions migrated from Makkah to Madinah. This migration, known as the Hijrah, marks the beginning of the Islamic calendar. In Madinah, he established a community based on faith, justice, mutual responsibility, and peaceful coexistence. Over the following years, the Muslim community faced several major conflicts, including Badr, Uhud, and the Battle of the Trench. Eventually, the Prophet (SAW) returned to Makkah in 630 CE, where the city was peacefully brought under Muslim rule and the idols around the Ka’bah were removed. In 632 CE, Prophet Muhammad (SAW) performed his Farewell Pilgrimage and delivered his famous Farewell Sermon, emphasising the sanctity of life and property, justice, the rights and dignity of women, equality among people, and adherence to the Qur’an and his guidance. Shortly afterward, the Prophet (SAW) passed away in Madinah at the age of 63. He was buried in the chamber of his wife Aishah (RA), adjacent to the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah. His life will forever remain a model of faith, patience, mercy, courage, leadership, justice, forgiveness, and devotion to Allah. The Qur’an describes him as “an excellent example” for those who hope in Allah and the Last Day (Qur’an 33:21). May Allah’s peace and blessings be upon Prophet Muhammad (SAW), his family, his companions, and all who follow his path. Ameen.

APPLAUSE FOR MARYAM IBRAHIM DAN’ AZUMI, NIGERIA’S QUR’ANIC CHAMPION I heartily congratulate Maryam Ibrahim Dan’ Azumi on her remarkable victory at the 46th King Abdulaziz International Qur’anic Competition in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Emerging victorious in a competition featuring participants from 132 other countries is an extraordinary achievement. Her mastery of the Holy Qur’an, including memorisation, recitation, Tajweed and Tafsir, reflects years of discipline, sacrifice, dedication and an unwavering pursuit of excellence. Maryam’s success is another powerful reminder of the enormous potential of young Nigerians to compete and excel on the global stage. Even more inspiring is the remarkable example of her family, with her elder sister, Hajara Ibrahim Dan Azumi, also having emerged first in an international Qur’anic competition in Jordan in 2024. Their achievements demonstrate what is possible when talent is nurtured through strong values, education, mentorship and family support. I congratulate their parents, teachers and mentors whose sacrifices and guidance have contributed immensely to these outstanding accomplishments. On behalf of the Federal Ministry of Youth Development, I celebrate Maryam for bringing honour to our country. May this achievement inspire millions of young Nigerians to pursue knowledge, discipline and excellence, and may Allah continue to increase her in knowledge and make the Holy Qur’an a source of guidance and blessing in her life. Congratulations, Maryam. Nigeria is proud of you.

PRESIDENT TINUBU CONGRATULATES MARYAM IBRAHIM DAN’ AZUMI ON WINNING KING ABDULAZIZ INTERNATIONAL QUR’ANIC COMPETITION President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Maryam Ibrahim Dan’ Azumi, a remarkable daughter of Gombe State and a proud Nigerian, for emerging as the winner in the women’s category at the 46th King Abdulaziz International Qur’anic Competition in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. A statement by the Special Adiviser to the President, Information and strategy, Bayo Onanuga commends Maryam for her exceptional performance and mastery of the Holy Qur’an at the prestigious international competition held in the holy city of Makkah. The statement notes that she beat her competitors from 132 other countries, earning a 300,000 Saudi Riyal prize, the equivalent of N120 million. It further adds that Maryam’s accomplishment is not only a personal triumph but also a source of national pride, as she has placed Nigeria prominently on the global stage through her mastery of the Holy Qur’an. President Tinubu describes Maryam and her elder sister, Hajara Ibrahim Dan Azumi, who came first in a similar competition in Jordan in 2024, as inspiration to young Nigerians. The President particularly commends their parents, teachers, mentors and all those who contributed to their development and success, recognising the sacrifices and commitment required to attain such an exceptional level of Qur’anic scholarship. President Tinubu also appreciates the organisers and authorities of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for providing a distinguished international platform that promotes excellence in Qur’anic memorisation, recitation, understanding and scholarship. Maryam Ibrahim Dan Azumi’s victory in the highly competitive category covering memorisation of the entire Holy Qur’an, recitation, Tajweed and interpretation of all 60 Hizb with Tafsir is a remarkable achievement that has brought immense honour to Nigeria and further demonstrated the excellence, discipline, dedication and intellectual capacity of Nigerian youths. “She has made Nigeria proud. Her achievement in Makkah is a powerful testimony to what our young people can accomplish when talent is matched with discipline, faith, hard work and dedicated mentorship. The President, on behalf of the Government and people of Nigeria, congratulates Maryam on this remarkable victory.
