Protecting underground utilities takes teamwork. Homeowners, excavators, utility operators, locators, and communities all play an important role in preventing damages and promoting safety. Contact NJOC before you dig at nj1-call.org. #damageprevention
Know your colors!
Utility markings follow a standardized color code to identify different types of underground utilities. For example, red indicates electric power lines, yellow marks natural gas, oil, or petroleum, and blue shows potable water lines.

WATCH OUT!
One wrong move and you’ll go from “yard work” to “network outage.” Phone lines and fiber optic cables are often buried just inches below the surface.
Know what's underground before you dig to help prevent damage.
#SafeDigging
The tolerance zone is a critical buffer for safe digging. Maintain a safe distance from each side of a marked utility and hand dig in this area.
This practice helps prevent damage and ensures safety.

Heavy rain or flooding can be treacherous to excavation projects. Whether you're digging, trenching, or just doing a DIY project, always contact 811 before you dig to stay safe, and file another markout to have utilities remarked after major weather events.
White lining clearly communicates the dig area and is a best practice for safe digging. Ensure your excavation site is well marked to set your site up for damage prevention.

Filing your markout online is quick and easy. Online filing allows you to provide detailed information about your project, track the status of your markout, and receive timely updates. Make your next project a success by filing online at nj1-call.org.
811 only marks public utility lines. That means water, gas, sewer, and telecom lines running from the street to your home or business are covered—but privately installed lines are not. You’ll need to hire a #PrivateUtilities locator to ensure everything is marked before you dig.
