8 Rescued After Hard Landing Into New York City's East River A seaplane made a rough landing in New York City's East River on Sunday, alarming bystanders but resulting in no apparent injuries, according to city authorities. The seaplane carrying 10 people made a “hard landing” around noon, according to the New York City Fire Department. The plane made it upright and was being towed back to dock, the department said.

ICE Lodges Detainer for Illegal Immigrant Trucker In Fatal Trooper Crash Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has lodged a detainer asking Pennsylvania authorities not to release an illegal immigrant trucker accused of killing a Pennsylvania State Police trooper. The driver has been identified as 33-year-old Michael Bon, a Haitian national living in Brockton, Massachusetts. In July 2024, Bon was released into the United States by the Biden administration, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). In October 2024, Bon filed an application for Temporary Protected Status, but it was never granted to him. Trump Uses Recent Speeches to Warn Americans of Resurging Communism President Trump used three recent speeches to deliver one of his strongest warnings yet about what he called a growing communist threat in the United States. Speaking at a June 26 Faith and Freedom Coalition conference and again during remarks on July 3 and July 4 tied to the nation's 250th anniversary, Trump said Americans must defend the country's identity against what he described as a resurgence of communist ideas. “There is now a resurgence of the communist menace in our land, including from newcomers to our country who embrace ideas totally opposed to our way of life and our great success,” Trump said on July 3. “These are not mere political disagreements like differences over taxes or regulations. Communism is a mortal threat to American liberty.”

Legionnaires' Disease Surge Reaches NYC Mayor's ZIP Code Several upscale Manhattan neighborhoods are under investigation by the New York City Department of Health for a community outbreak of Legionnaire’s disease that includes New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani's residence. The health department officially launched the investigation after confirming the first 2 cases on July 2, and by July 5, there were 18 cases in the Carnegie Hill and Yorkville neighborhoods, which span the 10028, 10128, and 10075 mail zip codes. Mamdani's official residence, known as Gracie Mansion, is located within the 10128 zip code. While the disease can progress quickly, it is treated with antibiotics. DOJ Asks States To Probe Oil Companies Amid High Gas Prices The Department of Justice (DOJ) on Friday announced it is urging state attorneys general to probe whether oil companies are illegally keeping gasoline prices artificially high after a recent decline in crude oil prices following a temporary end to hostilities between the United States and Iran. The agency's Vessel Sanitation Program said on Wednesday that 102 passengers, out of 3,032 total, and 23 crew members, out of 1,144 total, on board the Princess Cruises' Ruby Princess vessel reported being ill. The ship's voyage dates were from June 12 to July 2.
