Traditionally, long hair was always a symbol of masculinity. All of history's great warriors had long hair, from the Greeks (who wrote odes to their heroes' hair) to the Nordic, from the American Indians (famous for their long shiny hair) to the Japanese. And the longer and beautiful the hair was, the more manly the warrior was considered. Vikings flaunted their braids and samurai wore their long hair as a symbol of their honor (they cut their braid when they lose honor). When a warrior was captured, his mane was cut to humiliate him, to take away his beauty. That custom resumed in what is today military service. There when new soldiers begin their training the first thing they do is cut their hair to undermine their self-esteem, make them submissive and make them see who's boss. The Romans were the ones who "invented" short hair so to speak, between the 1st-5th Centuries AD. In battles they believed this gave them defensive advantages, since their opponents couldn't grab them by the hair. This also helped them to recognize each other in the battlefield. Short hair on men is a relatively new "invention" that has nothing to do with aesthetics. But today we often see men being humiliated, sometimes called "gay" for wearing long hair, not knowing that short hair is actually the "anti-masculine" and is a repressive social imposition, while long hair symbolizes freedom. 📷 : Rick Mora, a Native American actor and model of Yaqui and Apache descent. After the dams came down on the Klamath River, the Yurok Tribe didn't wait for nature to fix itself. For decades, four hydroelectric dams turned a living river into stagnant reservoirs. They blocked salmon and steelhead from 400 miles of spawning grounds, fueled toxic algae blooms, and raised water temperatures past what the fish could survive. When the last dam came down in late 2024, the river ran free again. But the exposed reservoir beds, 2,200 acres of bare sediment, were unstable and wide open to invasive species. So the Yurok Tribe got to work. Along a 38-mile stretch, tribal crews hand-sowed billions of native plant seeds, planted 76,000 trees and shrubs, and seeded 28,000 acorns. Nearly 100 native plant species. All by hand. All from seeds collected locally and grown out specifically for the restoration. It's already working. Salmon are spawning in the Upper Klamath Basin for the first time in over a century. Lupines and willows are stabilizing the banks. The river is breathing again. The Klamath is now the largest dam removal and river restoration project in US history, and the people doing the heaviest lifting are the ones who have lived along that river for thousands of years.

A billionaire bought a logging company in the Amazon rainforest just to shut it down. Swedish-British billionaire Johan Eliasch has taken a bold, hands-on approach to fighting climate change, shifting from business leadership to direct environmental action. In 2005, he acquired a logging company in Brazil, gaining control of approximately 400,000 acres (1,600 km²) of Amazon rainforest, which he immediately dedicated to preservation by halting all logging operations. This decisive move transformed a potential deforestation site into a protected carbon sink, safeguarding biodiversity on a vast scale. Eliasch's efforts extend far beyond this landmark purchase. He founded the Rainforest Trust, which has helped protect millions of acres worldwide, and co-founded Cool Earth in 2006—a charity that empowers indigenous communities to conserve endangered rainforests. His influence reaches policy and sports: he advised the UK government on deforestation (authoring the influential Eliasch Review in 2008), and as president of the International Ski Federation (FIS) since 2021, he has driven sustainability initiatives, including committing to the Race to Zero campaign to halve winter sports emissions by 2030.
