We welcome MP Prof. Varsha Eknath Gaikwad’s call for the government to take a firm stand against China’s so-called “Ethnic Unity and Progress Promotion Law” and its impact on Tibetans. India cannot ignore what happens across the Himalayas. China’s control of Tibet affects India’s borders, security, rivers, environment and regional stability. A free Tibet would mean a stronger voice for Tibetans over their land and rivers—and a more secure Himalayan frontier for India. The paper’s conclusions are far stronger than its methodology allows: Synthetic India = Ethiopia, China, Bangladesh, Pakistan & Philippines. A good historical fit does not make them a credible post-2014 India. Correlation is being sold as causation. Everything after 2014 is effectively bundled into a ‘Modi effect,’ including global and domestic shocks. Its ‘p=0.00’ sounds stronger than it is. The authors admit the small donor pool makes p-values coarse; under a conventional calculation the minimum can be ~0.08. All governance claims rely on V-Dem. Multiple correlated indicators from one dataset are not independent confirmation. In practical terms, #India saw major gains in infrastructure, digital public goods, formalisation, financial inclusion and poverty reduction after 2014. A serious assessment must weigh those outcomes too, not reduce a decade to one synthetic counterfactual. Bottom line: the paper shows India underperformed one model. It does not prove India would have been 10% richer without @narendramodi.
