The only reason I’m really not happy about them is that it’s coming at the cost of an entire raid tier that could have been actually organic to the FfXIV setting. I’m hopeful they’ll lean into that with Eva and integrate it well, but you can forgive my mild skepticism.

I feel like I’m going crazy with how reactions to the FF7R raid are being treated. Like, collabs at that scale have always had mixed reception and obviously doing it with the biggest game in town is going to leave a sour taste for some, especially while also doing the Eva raids.

@Hmmmmmnotsure And to be clear, I didn’t like it when they did it for FFT or FF11 either because those *did* feel like more egregious imports. You can disagree with that preference, but you have to acknowledge there is a difference in at least degree if not in kind.

@Hmmmmmnotsure @NeoSpacewaffles Sorrows of Werlyt is the same way. Great story that just happens to use the Weapons from FF7. And it’s certainly possible they’ll integrate everything that closely, it just seems like an extremely heavy lift for something like Cloud and Sephiroth in the key art or Unit 01 for Eva

@NeoSpacewaffles And I say this as someone who has played 13 of the numbered FFs. I love the franchise and recurring themes, ideas, and names are a core part of it, but I’m mostly just concerned at what these more blunt collaborations are coming at the cost of.

@NeoSpacewaffles Isn’t that kind of the point though? That the callbacks and references are one thing but full on importing characters and setting are another? They can make references until the cows come home, but someone unfamiliar shouldn’t notice because it should be part of the world

@coconatVT I don’t think FF14 is going to suffer long term damage here, but not having *either* raid series this expansion be primarily about the game’s world is pretty egregious. And coming directly after Kefka and the 11 raids, I just hope this isn’t a trend that continues.

Pacific Rim is a perfect example of "Rule of Cool" imo. I've heard people say that the Rule of Cool is that as long as something looks cool, it doesn't have to make sense—but I DISAGREE. My interpretation of the Rule of Cool is as long as it makes ENOUGH sense, the logic of it doesn't have to be perfect. The ship that Gypsy Danger uses as a sword for example. The second that mfer swung it back to grip it, it should have snapped in two because ships aren't designed to withstand that kind of tension. The same goes for the FOUR SWINGS THAT FOLLOW. But it doesn't snap in two, because we know that ships nowadays are fairly sturdy, because it has a real sense of weight to it and because it looks really fucking cool.
