Not in Science: In science, a theory is a well-substantiated explanation of some aspect of the natural world that can incorporate facts, laws, inferences, and tested hypotheses. It is a comprehensive, evidence-based framework—not a guess. The National Academy of Sciences puts it this way: a scientific theory is “a well-substantiated explanation of some aspect of the natural world, based on a body of facts that have been repeatedly confirmed through observation and experimentation.” Such theories are not hunches; they are reliable accounts of how nature works and they generate predictions about phenomena that have not yet been observed. How this differs from everyday use In casual speech, “theory” often means a speculation or untested idea (“I have a theory about why the traffic was bad”). In science the word means the opposite: an explanation that has already survived extensive testing.

You're referring to Chan et al., 2012. Let me quote from the papers author, J. Lee Nelson (senior author): “Any suggestion that male DNA is routinely retained from sexual partners has no support from any scientific study.” William Chan: intercourse as a source “has not been tested (or proven).” If partner DNA from sex were routine, you would see male microchimerism in nearly all adult women without sons. You don’t.

We tested this superstition in the 1890's: James Cossar Ewart’s Penycuik experiments (1890s) tested it directly: zebra stallion, then horse stallion. Subsequent foals did not pick up zebra characters. Parallel work in dogs and other stock failed the same way. Mendelian genetics and chromosomes then made the mechanism impossible as stated: a child gets one haploid genome from the egg and one from the fertilizing sperm of that pregnancy. Britannica and later genetics texts class classic telegony as a superstition. As for top horse breeders insisting on virgin mares, that's just BS. Proven broodmares with good foals are more valuable, not tainted. Foaling mares often conceive at higher rates than maidens. Older maiden mares are a known problem (“old maiden mare syndrome”: tight cervix, poor clearance, smaller foals). That is the opposite of “save her virginity for the good stallion.”
