Puntland, a semi-autonomous region in Somalia, is preparing to hold one-person-one-vote elections, the first of its kind in south-central Somalia, where indirect elections are prevalent. The Somali government, led by the president and prime minister, has, however, openly opposed the plan. Some see the opposition to universal suffrage as part of a larger effort by Somali politicians, foreign governments, and non-state actors to frustrate Somalia's political progress. Puntland President Saed Deni will press ahead with the electoral plan to demonstrate his opposition to the Mogadishu administration, but it may be what Somalia needs to transition away from indirect elections. If the election is successful, it could serve as a model for other federal states and lead to the country's adoption of universal suffrage. This has been a long-standing desire of millions of Somalis for decades. President Deni is on the right side of History today.

Al-Shabaab reports that a suicide bomber driving one of its truck bombs that exploded at a military base controlled by Burundian forces was Kenyan national. Bomber was identified as Jamaal Diba Diida (aka Zubeyr Al-Muhaajir). The May 3 attack killed at least 30 Burundian soldiers
