@ChrisPopeWrites Had a similar great day out on the RSH saddletanks at Agecroft Colliery, Lancs, about the same time in the late 70s. I was around 13 or 14, wrote a polite letter (being a nice middle-class kid 😁) to the manager and he arranged for my mate and I to visit. Seems incredible now!

@MostlyPrint I’m no expert but the capstan looks like a replica of a wooden original – and ‘timbers’ generally refers to the hull frame rather than decking. Spookily, someone on X posted a pic today of a wooden souvenir that appears to have been made in period out of wood from HMS Victory.

@LUDENClassics He told me a story once about how he wanted a particular colour of leather for one of his Rolls restorations, and spotted a guest he knew in a hotel lobby wearing shoes in exactly the right shade, so he ‘persuaded’ the guest to take off one of his shoes and lend it to him 😂

@LUDENClassics Sir Michael Kadoorie, who owns the Peninsula hotel chain, is a massive car fan and bought the original Silver Ghost, AX201, a couple of years ago. He orders fleets of new Rollers as hotel cars and I believe is the marque’s biggest customer. Apologies if you already knew all this!
