Most people drive past this building in Jozi without realising they're looking at the second-largest hotel in South Africa. The Sandton Hotel opened on 22 March 2022 and forms part of a massive mixed-use development in Benmore Gardens. The only hotel in SA with more rooms than this is Sun City. The development includes: • 562 hotel rooms • 482 upmarket rental apartments • A spa, pilates studio, deli, crèche, two swimming pools, private cinema, clubhouse, gym, 81-seat auditorium, conference centre and co-working space. I recently stayed at the hotel, and the rooms are larger than standard hotel rooms. The rooms feel more like apartments than hotel suites, with kitchenettes, washing machines, dryers, stovetops and separate lounge areas. I am fascinated by the owner/developer of this hotel group - Acsion Limited. They are the only JSE-listed company dedicated to property development while retaining its own developments as a landlord. Founded approximately 25 years ago by Kiriakos Anastasiadis, Acsion's current portfolio of assets is independently valued at R9.8 billion, with a GLA (gross lettable area) of 257,000m2 comprising ten strategically located properties across South Africa. They also own the recently acquired @Franschhoek Hotel (formerly Hey Joe Brewery and offering a classic Winelands stay), and they are responsible for the development of Cape Town’s 2nd-tallest skyscraper, currently under construction in Bree Street and set to open in 2028.
