A theoretical tax return for you in Norway should you decide to move here despite the winters being a bit cold and dark. Personal income - USDm 1 Income tax - 50% Personal net worth - USDbn 300 Wealth tax - 1.1% Payable tax = USDbn 3,3 And yes, the tax on your unrealized net worth is payable in cash. Even better, it is not one off and the tax is applied to your net worth every year. So over say 10 years you will contribute USDbn 33 to Norway personally adding to the national wealth fund. As tax returns are made public and printed in the press you will for sure get a lot of attention as well. Since you do not have any income in this example and the payable cash amount seems quite high, worry not as our politicians have the solution. You can get some dividends to pay the tax. E.g as you own 20% of Tesla, and the tax on dividends is 37,84% in Norway, Tesla just need pay a dividend of USDbn 22,7 in order for you to personally not go bankrupt and pay the wealth tax. What is great is that you and Tesla get to do this every year and over 10 years Tesla will have become a dividend machine having paid USDbn 227 in dividends to ensure you can pay your personal taxes to Norway. In the alternative, should Tesla not pay dividends due to not having such funds or rather use the funds for R&D, investments, new factories etc, you can simply sell your shares in Tesla instead to raise the cash. Unfortunately, you will not have any money to invest in new companies or spend personally in this scenario but who needs that. Hope you move to Norway soon Mr. Musk and bring your companies with you too.
