That's part of why pacing is so important, if you pace things out correctly you can give them options and have whichever options you need ready by the next session, without ending early or being forced to improvise last minute. It really helps if you can get your players to straight up say ahead of time before next session (or during the current one) exactly what they plan to do. Often if I give a bunch of options, I'll ask them to lay it all out in advance which order they want to do them in or if there are any they want to skip. Nowadays though they just do this automatically because they know how helpful it is.

Been working on my next 1-20 DnD campaign and I have to keep reminding myself to follow my own advice. Only prepare what you need, that's for them (the players.) Everything else is just for you. So yeah maybe I shouldn't worry about that dungeon they might not even go to right now, until they decide to go to it.

I used to until I set up a system for myself, I forced myself to only have 2 games i'm allowed to play at any given time. One with an ending and a slightly more flexible endless slot like paradox games or MMOs. I'm not allowed to switch from the first one until I finish it or replace it because it's just bad. It might sound silly but it's lead me to actually finishing games consistently for years, the self imposed restrictions allowed me to slow down and enjoy the games instead of thinking "i could be playing something else rn." Probably won't work for everyone but I stand by it.

Anyone who follows history knows that broadly it's the period after world war 2 until now. Within that period 1989 to about 2020 was the most quiet the world has ever been. People don't appreciate how common war and death used to be before all that. It was basically a free for all.
