本日7月19日(日)は開館日です。 最近、「夕立」が降らないな〜と感じています。 日中の暑さを和らげてくれていた夕立が降らず、 田んぼがカラカラだ、、、と近所の農家の方が こぼしていらっしゃいました。 夕立後のあの涼しい風が恋しいです。 「華宵のまなざしをたどる　 　　ーひとりの画家の内なる風景ー」展は 好評開催中です。 この展覧会には、 なぜか男性お一人で来館される方が多い気がします。 そしてじっくりと華宵のつぶやきを 読んでくださっています。 展覧会では、 （第１展示室）幼少期〜挿絵画家デビュー （第２展示室）挿絵画家全盛期 （第３展示室）戦後〜最晩年 という年代ごとに区切って、華宵の人生や作品を 展示しています。 「僕の思想は最早日本画家的ではない」 「画を絵く為に生活するのである」 「今では挿絵画家として日本一になりました」 「本当の自分本位の芸術家となるつもりが」 「私が望むものはほんとにほんとにむづかしい」 母や兄に宛てた手紙の抜粋や、 雑誌のインタビュー記事などから 華宵の声も併せてご紹介しています。 華宵もまた、 悩み苦しみながら生きた画家だったのだと、 改めて思うのです。 明日20日（月・祝日・海の日）も開館します。 Today, Sunday, July 19, is an opening day at The Kasho Museum. Lately, I have been noticing how rarely we see the gentle evening showers that once brought relief from the summer heat. A local farmer recently remarked that the rice fields are becoming parched without them. I find myself missing the cool breeze that always followed those summer rains. Our current Collection Theme Exhibition, Following Kasho's Gaze: The Inner Landscape of an Artist continues to receive a wonderful response from visitors. Interestingly, many people who visit this exhibition come alone—particularly men. They spend a long time quietly reading Kasho's own words, lingering over the letters and reflections that reveal his inner thoughts. The exhibition traces Kasho's life through three chronological galleries: Gallery 1: From his childhood to his debut as an illustrator (through around 1916) Gallery 2: The height of his career as an illustrator Gallery 3: From the postwar years to the final chapter of his life Alongside the artworks, visitors can also encounter Kasho's own voice through excerpts from letters to his mother and older brother, as well as magazine interviews. "My way of thinking is no longer that of a traditional Japanese painter." "I live in order to paint." "Now I have become Japan's leading illustrator." "Yet I had hoped to become an artist true only to myself." "What I seek is truly, truly difficult." Reading these words, one cannot help but feel that Kasho, too, lived a life marked by doubt, struggle, and quiet perseverance. The museum will also be open tomorrow, Monday, July 20 (Marine Day, a national holiday). We look forward to welcoming you.

本日7月12日(日)は開館日です。 朝から暑いです。猛暑日になりそうです。 7月12日は、1925年（大正14年）に 東京放送局（現NHK）が ラジオ本放送を始めた日だそうです。 当初は普及率は東京でも0.2~0.3％ほどだったそうで、 値段も教員初任給の1.2ヶ月分から8ヶ月分ほど （ラジオの種類によって値段が異なる）と、 庶民には高嶺の花でした。 新し物好きの華宵は、 大正14年の8月には早速ラジオを購入し、 大音量で聴いている様子を、 母親に手紙で自慢しています。 ラジオ本体は最初は、 ヘッドフォンをつけて一人で聴くタイプ（鉱石ラジオ）と みんなで聴くタイプ（真空管ラジオ）という 2種類がありました。 当初は裕福な家庭や公会堂、商店街など地域の人が 集まって一緒に聴くことができるような形で設置 されていましたが、徐々に契約者数も伸びて （ラジオの値段も下がってきて）、 1930年以降は一般家庭にもラジオが設置されることが多くなり、新しい娯楽として定着していきました。 ラジオの普及と女性の髪型で面白い現象が起きました。 「ラジオ巻」という洋髪スタイルが考案されたのです。 これはヘッドホンをつけてラジオを聴くイメージから 考案されたもので、 両方の耳のあたりに髪の毛を巻き付けて まるでヘッドホンをつけているように見えるスタイルです。 華宵もこのスタイルが気に入っていたのか、 しばしば和装のモダンガールをラジオ巻スタイルで 描いています。 「華宵のまなざしをたどる 　ーひとりの画家の内なる風景ー」展は好評開催中です。 次の開館日は7月18日(土)、19日(日)、20日(月・祝)です。 Today, Sunday, July 12, is a museum opening day. It has been hot since early morning, and the temperature is expected to reach the mid-30s°C. On this day in 1925 (Taishō 14), the Tokyo Broadcasting Station—today's NHK—began Japan's first regular radio broadcasts. At that time, however, radio ownership was still extremely rare. Even in Tokyo, only about 0.2–0.3% of households had a radio. Depending on the type, a radio cost anywhere from about 1.2 to 8 months' salary for a newly appointed schoolteacher, making it far beyond the reach of most ordinary families. Always fascinated by the latest trends, Kashō purchased a radio as early as August 1925. In a letter to his mother, he proudly wrote about listening to it at full volume. In the early days, there were two main types of radios. Crystal radios were inexpensive and required listeners to use headphones, while vacuum tube radios were much more expensive but could be heard through a loudspeaker, allowing several people to listen together. At first, radios were mainly found in wealthy households, public halls, and shopping districts, where local people would gather to enjoy broadcasts together. As the number of subscribers increased and the price of radios gradually fell, they became increasingly common in ordinary homes during the 1930s, establishing themselves as a popular new form of entertainment. The spread of radio also inspired an unexpected fashion trend: the Radio Maki ("Radio Roll") hairstyle. Named after the headphones worn by radio listeners, this modern hairstyle featured rolled sections of hair over both ears, creating the impression of wearing headphones. Kashō seems to have been particularly fond of this fashionable style, often depicting modern young women in kimono wearing the distinctive Radio Maki hairstyle. Our current exhibition, "Tracing Kashō's Gaze: The Inner Landscape of an Artist," is now on view. Our next opening days will be Saturday, July 18; Sunday, July 19; and Monday, July 20 (National Holiday).

本日7月11日(土)は開館日です。 四国地方はまだ梅雨明けしていませんが、 快晴の朝です。 明治35年7月26日付の父と母に宛てた 華宵からの手紙が残っています。 同年4月から大阪で画塾に通い始めた華宵は この時15歳。親元を離れて４ヶ月が 経とうとしている時です。 前月の月謝は父の指示通り親戚から借りたが、 今月分の生活費も借りて良いのだろうか、、、、 という相談です。 その後、天神祭り見学の様子を長々と 書き記しています。 元々お祭り好きの華宵ですから、その手紙からは祭りを見ての興奮が、事細かにしたためられています。 しかしながら文体は候文で、 非常に堅苦しい感じが伝わってきます。 一方で同時期の母宛の手紙はというと、 同じく候文ではありますが、思春期の少年らしく、 母親に甘えて、衣服をねだっています。 ＊＊＊＊＊ 拝啓先日申上候帯の儀は、何の御返事も無之候故、 をゝかた御送り下さるものと存、 毎日、今日は来るか明日は来るかと待居候ひしに、 天神祭の今日迄、何の事も無之候。 御送り下さらずば、其御返事被下ならん。 御送りなれば、祭日迄には来るならんと 日々待ち申候が、 如何に候や。御送りは無之候や、伺ひ申候。 以上 御無理にては候へ共、 父上にないしょにてちりめん一筋御来如下さる事 かのうまじく候や。御返事待つ。 母上様 ＊＊＊＊＊ 父親は怖い存在で甘えることなど出来ないが、 母親に「父上にないしょ」でおねだりをする、 可愛らしい華宵少年です。 さて、本日16:00からは 哲学カフェ＠カフェ・カショーです。 テーマは「ふるさと」です。 どんな話が出てくるのか、楽しみです。 明日も開館いたします。 Today, Saturday, July 11, the museum is open. Although the rainy season has not yet ended in Shikoku, we are enjoying a beautiful, cloudless morning. Among Kasho’s surviving correspondence is a letter dated July 26, 1902, addressed to both his father and mother. Having begun attending an art school in Osaka that April, Kasho was just fifteen years old. It had been nearly four months since he had left home to pursue his studies. In the letter, he explains that, following his father's instructions, he had borrowed the previous month's tuition from a relative. He then respectfully asks whether it would be acceptable to borrow this month's living expenses in the same way. After that, the tone of the letter changes completely. He devotes page after page to describing his visit to the Tenjin Festival. Kasho had loved festivals since childhood, and his excitement over what he had seen is recorded in remarkable detail. The letter itself, however, is written in the formal literary style known as sōrōbun (classical epistolary Japanese), giving it an exceptionally dignified and restrained tone. A letter written to his mother around the same time presents quite a different side of the young artist. Although it, too, is composed in sōrōbun, beneath its formal language one can clearly sense the voice of an adolescent boy affectionately appealing to his mother for new clothes. I humbly write concerning the sash of which I spoke in my previous letter. As I have received no reply, I have presumed that you intended to send it. Day after day I waited, wondering whether it might arrive today or tomorrow, yet even now, on the day of the Tenjin Festival, nothing has come. If you do not mean to send it, I would be most grateful if you would kindly let me know. If you do intend to send it, I have continued to hope that it might reach me before the festival. Pray tell me how matters stand. I respectfully await your reply. Though I know it may be asking too much, might it perhaps be possible for you to send me a length of chirimen silk—if only as a secret between us, and without Father's knowledge? I shall eagerly await your answer. To my dear Mother His father was someone he respected too deeply to ask for such a favor. But his mother was another matter. Secretly asking her to send him a piece of silk—"without Father's knowledge"—reveals the endearingly youthful side of the fifteen-year-old Kasho. This afternoon at 4:00 p.m., we will be holding our Philosophy Café at Café Kasho. Today's theme is "Hometown." I'm looking forward to discovering where the conversation will lead. The museum will also be open tomorrow.

本日７月5日(日)は開館日です。 昨日よりも強めの雨が降っています。 雷も時折鳴り響いています。 来週の土曜日７月11日に、 哲学カフェ＠カフェ・カショーを開催します。 これはたまたまその場に集った人々が、 一つのテーマについて語り合うイベントです。 今回のテーマは「ふるさと」です。 現在開催中の展覧会 「華宵のまなざしをたどる 　ーひとりの画家の内なる風景ー」展を企画中に 何度も考えたこと、 「華宵にとってふるさとの宇和島とはどんな存在だったのか？」からヒントを得ました。 大正３年の唱歌〈故郷〉では、 「忘れ難き故郷」「思い出る故郷」 「いつの日にか帰らん」と謳われた 「ふるさと」ですが、 大正７年の室生犀星の〈抒情小曲集〉では、 「ふるさとは遠きにありて思ふもの」 「帰るところにあるまじや」となっています。 みなさんにとっての「ふるさと」はどちらでしょう？ ぜひご一緒に「ふるさと」について考え、 「ふるさと」に想いを馳せてみませんか？ ご参加お待ちしています。 哲学カフェ＠カフェ・カショー （テーマ）ふるさと （日時）2026年7月11日(土) 16:00〜 （場所）カフェ・カショー（高畠華宵大正ロマン館内） （参加費）500円 （定員）10名 （お申し込み）コメント欄からどうぞ↓ 次の開館日は7月11日(土)、12日(日)です。 Today, Sunday, July 5, the museum is open. It is raining even harder than yesterday, and we can occasionally hear thunder. Next Saturday, July 11, we will hold our Philosophy Café at Café Kasho. This is a casual gathering where people who happen to meet can enjoy talking together about a single theme. The theme this time is "Hometown." While planning our current exhibition, "Following Kasho's Gaze: The Inner Landscape of an Artist," I kept asking myself one question: "What did Uwajima, his hometown, mean to Kasho?" That question became the inspiration for this Philosophy Café. In the famous Japanese children's song "Furusato" (Home Village), written in 1914, hometown is described as a place that is "never forgotten," "fondly remembered," and "a place to which we hope to return someday." A few years later, however, the poet Murō Saisei wrote in his Lyrical Sketches (1918): "A hometown is something to be remembered from afar; it is not necessarily a place to return to." Which of these ideas feels closer to your own? Why not join us as we reflect on what "hometown" means and share our own memories and thoughts? We look forward to welcoming you.
