@ProCyclingStats @Tratnikstan Mike Woods came came back at the same level, arguably.
My entire philosophy of training 👇 1. Above and beyond performance level/performance goals, first and foremost, movement is medicine. It needs to be taken over the lifespan and is most important in the latter years. If you don't 'take your medicine' regularly, at some point you're going to experience significant pain. As such, our #1 responsibility & first priority, as coaches, should always be to facilitate a healthy, long-term relationship with physical activity & "do no harm". 2. A serious commitment to endurance sports training provides an outlet (and some societal legitimacy) for us, as adults in the modern, 'developed' (non paleolithic) world, to move the amount necessary to preserve health and function over time &, beyond that, the amount that we (as humans) are designed to! 3. As in medicine, when prescribed the right 'dose' at the right time, ALL healthy athletes will get better (though at different rates). As in medicine, when the wrong dose is prescribed, ALL athletes will fail to respond to 'treatment' & eventually get sick. As in medicine, when no organized 'treatment plan' is prescribed, the athlete will progressively deteriorate over time. In other words, plan first and foremost for *consistency* & #TakeYourMedicine 4. It follows that, a large part of 'good coaching' comes down to prescribing the right dose of the right medicine for a given athlete at the right time (In my opinion, not quantifying the dosages that you're prescribing amounts to irresponsible medicine & bad coaching). 5. The 'right dosage' that amounts to an athlete getting better, not sick, overtrained or injured, varies greatly among individual athletes (according to training background, gender, age and genetics) . The 'right dose' is also very strongly related to other (non-training) stressors in their life. Therefore, good coaches (& athletes) monitor non-training stressors & adjust the training accordingly. 6. Athletes who can handle truly competitive 'big doses' tend to be generally 'robust' - strong, supple, muscularly balanced with good general health and constitution, i.e. they lay a foundation of moving well in a variety of ways, at a variety of speeds, with a variety of loads. Even then, big doses can only be sustained for short periods of time and by going out of their way to facilitate recovery (sleep, nutrition etc). This includes actively minimizing/managing other sources of stress, i.e. they eat nutritious foods and live a simple, stable, low-stress life. 7. When it comes to the 'medicine of choice', intensity is no substitute for aerobic volume. The effects don't last and high intensity training has significant negative 'side effects'. If the goal is continued athletic development over the long term, there is simply no substitute for a strong aerobic base.
@Alan_Couzens For a new follower of yours, do you have a talk, presentation, podcast, blog etc. which summarises your entire philosophy of training?
Jakob Ingebrigtsen 🇳🇴 wins GOLD in his season opener at the European Championships over 5000m! First race in almost a year and after 6 good weeks of training.
@futurologiae @williesmurfy Show me a situation, where a leader in a GC battle tries to overtake a domestique around the outside in a corner at 50km/h going into the final climb.
Let me atleast "try" help explain this to the general public that might be easily fooled. 1. If you're on a wheel of a teammate, especially going into a corner, it's your right to fight for that wheel and stay on it (you do not have to give it up simply because someone next to you is in a yellow jersey). 2. It is extremely hard to try pass someone on the outside of a corner, 99,9% you'll end up 2nd best. 3. 100% of the time if you're on a teammates wheel in a corner, you have the right to fight for that wheel. That also means you drift into the same line as your teammate infront of you (also to maintain the slipstream). She did follows Demi's line, so sorry to burst someone's bubble who thinks she has to cut in sharper, endangering herself, simply to make space for a rider on the outside that is trying to take a line that will get you boxed in. 4. An old discussion that happens regularly in the bunch is - both have brakes, but who is forced to brake first. If you have your handlebar a centimeter ahead of the rider next to you, it normally means the other rider will probably have to feather the breaks first. Also its common knowledge that if you have the inside line, you get the benefit of drifting in the direction you think the best line is (this becomes extremely tactical). 5. Don't be fooled by slow motion helicopter shots. Its like cricket. On camera we can all see the ball and see the ball traveling on TV..but if you're to stand with bat in hand, and someone's bowling to you at 150km/h , you'll probably not even see the ball passing you. The same for a cyclist on the bike, its not as simple from the riders point as view even though it looks simple from the television. 6. Lastly, its completely normal in the final corner of a bike race for a teammate to leave a gap in the corner so your teammate infront of you can solo away. It happens regularly and is defined as tactical brilliance. No one ever complains. But all a sudden in todays stage when Demi's teammate didn't even leave the gap (as bad as she could), some want to call it obstruction and call for penalties ect. Absolutely dilutional stuff. There's absolutely nothing here. On another note, if these incidents were to be defined as obstruction you would destroy the sport of cycling, because that would mean by definition ANY type of obstruction would then have to be penalized. What that basically means is that in a Belgium classic when everyone is fighting for an important corner, half the bunch would already be penalized because the fight for the corner automatically forces you to manuaver and OBSTRUCT riders next to you in order to get ahead of them in the corner. The fight is not pretty and there is a lot of bumping and barging going on (and also rider on the inside often drift outward tactically to cut of rider trying to pass on the outside of the corner. Want to ban that?! Then you might aswell turn our sport into triathlon!
As it's Nigel Mansell birthday here's a very special 10 minutes from the legendary 1998 BTCC race at Donington
I'm sorry & this will probably not sit well with many. But in my whole career this has been pretty normal & part of cycling. I've not been in a race my entire career where you can simply go in a corner and expect an opponents teammate to make it easy for you to pass. When entering any corner, it's ALWAYS been to the norm to anticipate that someone might leave a gap or drift in a direction that makes it difficult for an opponent to pass & benefit their leader. I simply do not agree blaming someone else if you were tactically "blocked ". Like I said, this always happens in a race as we get closer to the finish of a race. Majority of viewers don't know cycling to even notice it happening unless someone makes a scene out of it like in this case.
Will we ever know what Celia Gery did to Kasia after 0:07 of this video? The live broadcast skipped at least 5 seconds from that corner. Vollering was already leading when the moto shows images, Kasia had to do a big effort to catch back. #TDFF2026
@lucxsronald i don't see gery doing anything wrong here...

A representation of the Lactate Shuttle. Lactate produced by fast-twitch muscle fibers is exported and taken up by slow-twitch muscle fibers, where it enters the mitochondria and is oxidized to produce ATP. At the same time, lactate circulating in the bloodstream is also transported into the mitochondria, where it serves as an important oxidative fuel. After more than 55 years of pioneering research, Dr. George Brooks fundamentally changed our understanding of metabolism by demonstrating that lactate is not a waste product, but a central energy substrate and signaling molecule. His work showed that lactate is likely one of the body's preferred fuels under many physiological conditions and, in many tissues, is metabolized more rapidly than glucose. The Lactate Shuttle concept transformed the field of cellular bioenergetics and forever changed how we understand exercise physiology, metabolism and human performance. A few years ago, Dr. Brooks and I began discussing a simple question: What if we added lactate itself as an additional fuel source to a high-carbohydrate sports nutrition formulation? That conversation eventually led to the development of Enervit's new C2:1PRO Lactate Gel Mix. Over the past two years, it has been a pleasure collaborating with the outstanding team at @enervit to bring this concept from physiology to practice. Dr. Brooks, Enervit, and I are now preparing high-quality educational and scientific materials built upon a combined 85 years of cutting-edge research and applied physiology, spanning laboratory science to real-world experience with elite athletes. The C2:1PRO Lactate Gel Mix represents another step forward in sports nutrition and opens exciting possibilities for athletes looking to optimize their training and competition fueling strategies. That said, we also need to be honest. No gel will make you win the Tour de France. No product will magically give you 40 extra watts. And no supplement can replace years of consistent work. Performance will always be built on the fundamentals: training, nutrition, recovery, and consistency. The goal of science is not to replace those principles, but to help athletes make them work even better. #Lactate #SportsNutrition #ExercisePhysiology #Fuel #Mitochondria #Innovation #Science #Performance #Endurance #Enervit
The climb on Alpe d'Huez further supports our previous estimates. Pogacar likely needs a VO2max of ~99 ml/kg/min (95-103) to do that climb, assuming: - 65 kg - bike + equipment: 7.6 kg - Efficiency: 22-24% - 88% of VO2max during 35 minutes All credits to @OleKBerg!
Does Tadej Pogacar have the highest VO2max ever reported? Does he surpass the barrier of 100 ml/kg/min? In this study, soon in @ijspp, we estimated his VO2max based on race performances, finding an average of 96 ml/kg/min (up to 102)! Led by @SitkoSebastian @OleKBerg 1/6🧵

@ammattipyoraily 37'21. Competition not strong enough to push him to a new record, similar to Hautacam 2025.
In Hungary 1986, we witnessed on the wildest overtakes in the entire Formula 1 history, when Nelson Piquet overtook Ayrton Senna to win the race
🇧🇪 Remco Evenpoel last thirteen normal ITTs (non MTT or Prologue): 1st 1st 1st 1st 1st 1st 1st 1st 1st 1st 1st 1st 1st
So far in 2026, Tadej Pogačar has amassed 15 wins in 22 race days, but it's not stats like that which astound me most. The one that always stands out to me is this: Since his first year junior in 2015, he's started 46 UCI ranked stage races, a total of 376 days. Not once has he DNF'd. Not once has he got sick enough or crashed hard enough to withdraw from a stage race in almost 12 years. In a sport as dangerous, unpredictable and brutal as cycling, that is mind boggling. It's one of his strongest assets but rarely talked about. #tdf2026
Pogačar demolishes Tourmalet record 💥 Tadej Pogačar climbed the Col du Tourmalet from Sainte-Marie-de-Campan (17.2km at 7.4% average gradient) on Tour de France Stage 6 in 43:02, over 2min faster than the previous record. Vingegaard also broke the old record in 43:32. 📸 Getty
