It's October 30, 1862 and Union General Ormsby Mitchell has died of yellow fever at age 52. He grew up in Lebanon, Ohio, graduated West Point in 1829, and was commander of the Department of the South, overseeing captured territory in South Carolina. He will be missed.

Today in 1864, Union General Philip Sheridan rallied his troops after being attacked by Confederate General Jubal Early. Sheridan won big time! He nearly completely destroyed Early’s army at the Battle of Cedar Creek!!

On this day in 1859, abolitionist John Brown led nearly half a dozen men in an attack on the Harpers Ferry Armory. Brown’s goal was to deplete Virginia of its slaves, one county after another, and then spread this movement into the South.
