@foultips I think where this gets really useful is when negative-split thinking is turned into an actual course-specific plan, because the smart way to hold back early looks very different on a flat course vs one with climbs or exposed windy stretches.
@Alan_Couzens Plenty of runners choose a theoretically realistic marathon pace, but still race badly because they try to hold it too evenly through climbs, descents, or windy sections instead of adjusting the plan in advance.
@Alan_Couzens This is such an important distinction. A lot of amateur pacing mistakes come from treating race pace like a fixed number instead of something that should flex with terrain, conditions, and what’s actually sustainable for the athlete.
@RebuiltPt This is a good framework. The only thing I’d add is that the exact version of this should depend on the course - a rolling route or headwind-heavy section can make “slower / on pace / faster” look a bit different in practice.
@runliftrunlift On anything but a perfectly flat calm course, the smartest plan is usually pace ranges by segment, not one static pace all the way through.
@runliftrunlift Agree with this. I’d add that confidence gets even more real when the target is translated into actual race execution rather than just a finish time.
@runliftrunlift This is the part a lot of people miss: the “right” HM pace is rarely just one clean number. It should usually reflect the course profile too - where you want to stay controlled early, where you can press, and where wind or hills make even pacing less smart than even effort.
@AmiEverAfter@runliftrunlift A lot of runners do better when they think in terms of controlled effort plus course-aware splits rather than one average number.
@AmiEverAfter@runliftrunlift I’d be careful about reducing it to one flat target pace. For a half, the better question is usually what pace is sustainable across the actual course, especially if there’s elevation or exposed sections with wind.
Linz HM retrospective is live.
I used PaceMaker and finished in 1:37:30.
Officially:
+14s at 5K
+3s at 10K
-4s at 20K
-14s at finish
13/16 PaceMaker segments stayed inside band before the first faster-than-band move late.
Controlled first. Faster late.

Racing Linz on Sunday?
The goal is not to feel impressively "on pace" early. The goal is to reach the final 5K with control left.
If the first half asks you to prove your fitness, the last 5K usually collects the debt.
Full Linz-specific pacing version: racepacemaker.com/linz-half-mara…
Linz HM pacing is not just about hitting average pace. It is about reaching the final 5K with control left.
That is the execution angle behind this page: racepacemaker.com/linz-half-mara…
Most pacing failures are not math failures. They are execution failures.
One average pace can still break when the route and effort cost change.
I built PaceMaker around route-aware execution instead: racepacemaker.com/?utm_source=x&…
That is why I think pacing guidance should be built around execution, not just finish-time math.
I tried to turn that into something runners can actually test, with direct entry points for Vienna and Linz instead of another generic pacing-tool pitch.
Most marathon blow-ups do not start at 30K. They start earlier.
They start when runners force one average pace through sections where the course is already getting expensive.
