Delighted to share that the @NIDDKgov funded @iidp_at_coh is reporting characterization of close to 300 organ donors.
Working at this scale there are lots of insights into the heterogeneity of islets even in people without diabetes but most importantly the data behind this paper are now available on the IIDP RDR for others to explore and use for their own research. At the @ADA_DiabetesPro meeting next month the NIDDK funded @PanKbase will also release a browser to explore some of these data in concert with other omic data.
It takes a village to do this type of science including dedicated funding over decades to support the infrastructure. Proud to have played a small part in this effort which was championed by #IIDP co-directors @cevansmo & @NilandLab and #HIPP director #MarcelaBrissova (not on X).
Huge shout out to the many amazing early career investigators who have contributed to this work over the last decade particularly co-first authors- #YasminyePettway (not on X), @SethASharp@_dianecait .

Using genetic data from ~20,000 individuals with T1D and ~800,000 without, they identified novel genetic risk factors and developed T1GRS, a machine learning model for improved T1D risk prediction.
T1GRS improved classification even in individuals who don't carry classical high-risk HLA haplotypes, and across multi-ancestry populations.
The study also identified four genetic subclusters of T1D with significant differences in age of onset and diabetes complications a step toward precision medicine for T1D.
As preventative therapies like Tzield expand what's possible for T1D prevention, better risk prediction matters more than ever. This work could help identify at-risk individuals earlier and improve outcomes. 🙏
