Two more costs sit between an agent and a paid service: gas, and time. The rails take both off the table. On L2 gas is sponsored, so the fee that breaks micropayments is not passed on. Settlement is immediate, paid straight to the wallet. With cheapest-path routing and no-swap settlement, the pattern holds: overhead removed at each step, not reduced. The cheapest swap is the one that never happens. Most of the cost in a small payment is the token swap, ~0.3% each time. The usual fix is a cheaper swap. The better one is to avoid it. When the path needs no swap, the rails take it, and that 0.3% is removed, not discounted. A meaningful share of payments qualify, and the facilitator finds them first. Every payment starts by finding the cheapest way to move it. An agent rarely holds the token a service wants. Paid naively that is a swap, ~0.3% plus gas, every time. At agent scale that is the margin. So the facilitator maps the paths and picks the cheapest in real time, by liquidity, gas, and pairs, per transaction. Every system fails sometimes. What matters is how, and this one fails clean. Empty wallet, the agent stops. It does not borrow, overdraw, or keep charging. The worst case is it runs out of room to act: a pause, not a loss. Compare a shared card handed to an agent, where a retry loop can keep charging long after you would want it to stop. The instinct is to ask for more controls: allowlists, category limits, daily caps, approval rules. We deliberately don't have that layer, and it is a safety decision. Every dial can be set wrong. Config layers are where failures live: the allowlist too broad, the cap never updated, the rule with an untested edge. So the control surface is one thing: the funded wallet. The boundary, in one line: the wallet you fund is the budget. Fund the agent's wallet with what you are willing to let it spend. That amount is the ceiling. The agent pays out of it automatically, and when it is empty it stops. No separate limit, no spending rule, no dashboard to police. The simplest boundary is the hardest to get wrong.
