Wat Chedi Liam (Wat Ku Kham) dates from the early era of the Wiang Kum Kam ancient city. The shape is derived from the more ancient Mon-Dvaravati style Ku Kut Chedi found in Lanna’s predecessor kingdom, Hariphunchai (modern Lamphun). #archaeology #travel #thailand

Wat Pratu Pong (วัดประตูป่อง) is a #Lanna-era temple located near (& named after) Pratu Pong, one of Lampang’s old city gates. The #temple contains ornate wooden viharn dating from the 1900s, which has been renovated and well-maintained over the years like many others in #Lampang

The Amok Tower (หออะม็อก) sits on the east bank of the Wang River and is a piece of the #fortification built in 1808 CE. The structure itself is a large octagonal building approximately 10.25 meters high. On its western face is the opening that originally faced the inside wall.

The Pratu Ma gate or “Horse Gate” is the sole remaining city gate of Lampang. It dates from the Lanna Period, when the city wall was reinforced with brickwork. The gate marks the northernmost extent of the city’s walls throughout all the stages of expansion. #Thailand #travel

The Dazu Rock Carvings in #Chongqing, China began work in the Tang Dynasty and depict #Buddhist, Confucian and Taoist imagery. Unlike most similar Buddhist grottoes found throughout #China, most of the carvings at Dazu retain their original colouring. #travel #archaeology

The #Bayon is the signature monument of Khmer King Jayavarman VII standing at the center of Angkor Thom. The original name was Jayagiri (“Victory Monument”), and its style dictated the rest of the massive building projects the king initiated throughout the @Angkor Empire.

The Barabar Caves in Bihar Province in northern India are considered by archaeologists as some of the oldest, if not the oldest, rock-cut cave temples in #India. They are dated to the era of the Maurya Empire, some 2300 years ago and created for the purpose of meditation. #travel

A 5 minute walk from Kaludiya Pokuna, the #Rajagiri Caves were used by #Buddhist hermits who sought to distance themselves from the city of #Anuradhapura. Many #caves, including the largest shown here, were secluded by building an enclosure wall under a rocky overhang. #SriLanka

Despite there being 5 main, rock-cut caves in the #Dambulla complex, researchers have actually found over 80. The most notable temples are some of the oldest Buddhist monastic centers in #SriLanka, and have history going back much longer than #Buddhism.

Square Tower House is the tallest such structure at Mesa Verde, standing 4 storeys. Its surrounding settlement contains 60 rooms and 8 round temples known as kivas. It has undergone preservation and stabilization work every decade since the first repairs began in 1919. #travel
