The most recent OnDefend study is interesting. This whole DJI ban, and a lot of other sensationalized bans of Chinese technology products in the U.S. are misguided. I am very aware of the threat China poses, but these bans are just silly political fear-mongering. Like many, probably most, U.S. companies that operate drones commercially, we'll be happy to move to and all U.S.-manufactured fleet when we can compete on functionality and come close on price. For the past 22 years, on Memorial Day, I have visited the graves of New Jersey’s Bianchi brothers in East Hanover to place flags on them. Both were fellow Naval Academy graduates (Robert in 1983 and Kevin in 1985) and fellow Naval Aviators. Robert was killed in an aircraft mishap (HH-46) in the Philippines in 1987, and Kevin was killed in a mishap (MH-53E) in Italy in 2003. Kevin is buried just behind his brother. I did not know Robert, but Kevin was two years ahead of me in the 23rd Company at the Naval Academy. I interacted with him daily for about a year, but did not know him very well. Although he’s one of those people you can’t forget. For me, visiting their graves allows me not only to honor them but also the dozens of fellow Naval Aviators I knew who lost their lives in service to our country, the thousands more I didn’t know, and the more than one million Americans who died in service to our nation. If you’re not familiar with the story of the Bianchi brothers of Maplewood, I encourage you to learn about them. Just search for Robert and Kevin Bianchi, and you’ll read about their inspiring lives, their sacrifice, and the incredible sacrifice made by their family in losing two sons in service to our nation. It’s a local story and a great, sobering example of what Memorial Day is really about.

Runway 29 at Newark (EWR) is a very short runway for a 767-400ER - even a light one. I’ve seen, and been on, many smaller airliners, up to a 757, and it’s always an aggressive stop even for them. As a commercial pilot, I’ve also shot instrument approaches to this runway in a smaller GA aircraft years ago, coming from the other direction to RW 11. It looks very small compared to the main runways, which are 10,000 and 11,000 feet long. Once, while stuck in traffic on the I-78 bridge by the airport, I saw a DC-10 (old cargo version) land on it – It came in steep, looked like it was just hanging there, and landed very firmly. In all likelihood, this crew came in low (obviously), slow, and shallow, hoping to use every available inch of runway, and got behind the power curve. It will be interesting to see whose idea it was and if ATC suggested it. It could have been much worse and showed very poor judgment and airmanship on the flight crew’s part. Thankfully, it appears nobody was badly hurt. A United jet narrowly avoided catastrophe when it struck a truck near Newark airport during landing apnews.com/article/united…

As today comes to a close, let's not forget it's World Sarcoidosis Day! As I've mentioned before, I was first diagnosed with this shitty disease 16 years ago. The first 5 years were brutal, and the "chronic" phase, which I guess I'll be in forever, is painful, annoying, and frustrating. But the tough will persevere. And there are people out there with this bizarre disease who have it much worse than I do. If you're not aware of it, please take some time to learn about it and the other rare autoimmune diseases.
