Peace One Day @PeaceOneDay

We have begun the edit of a new film with my dear friend and long-time collaborator, Adrian Begon. I first worked with Adi when I was a young actor. He cut together my showreel, and from there began a friendship and creative partnership that has now lasted more than three decades. Together we edited Where the Red Wind Blows, my film about the 1997 handover of Hong Kong. It was a mammoth undertaking. Endless days and nights spent in an edit suite, driven by a belief that stories matter. When we finally finished, exhausted but proud, we took a photograph to mark the moment. Since then, Adi has edited Peace One Day, the film that documented the journey to establish the International Day of Peace, and The Day After Peace, which followed our work in Afghanistan and helped demonstrate that even in the most challenging circumstances, people can choose peace. Over the years, those films have become part of a much bigger story. Today, billions of people are aware of Peace Day, and measurable reductions in violence have been recorded on 21 September. The films were not separate from that impact; they helped make it possible. This week, as we began work on a new feature documentary, Cry for Peace (working title), I was reminded of that old photograph from the Where the Red Wind Blows edit. So we took another one. Thirty-three years later. Different technology. Different challenges. A different world. But the same belief. As a filmmaker, and as someone who has spent much of his life working for peace, I have never felt more concerned about the direction of our world. Yet I remain convinced that storytelling is one of the most powerful tools we have for change. Whether you run a business, a charity, an NGO, or a movement, now is the time to tell stories. Stories that inform. Stories that inspire. Stories that help people believe that positive change is still possible. Because if we simply sit back and watch events unfold, things rarely get better by themselves. We must act. And every meaningful action begins with a story. Here’s to the next film.
