It’s disappointing that @Colgate bricks its own toothbrushing app. We got this message that the app will be retired in December, but there is no way to bypass the message on two phones. A toddler is tearful tonight about not being able to make any more progress earning “stars”.

@xwanyex The benefit of reclining is small for MOST people, and indeed most people don’t recline. Some recliners are antisocial like you implied, but I can imagine that a small number of people really need it on a particular flight. For their sake, I’m content having that be an option.

MLB teams are quite unevenly distributed: if you group by mega-regions, the broader Great Lakes has 11 teams. You could argue whether an MLB expansion should lean into its regional strengths or build more geographic diversity, but the Piedmont Atlantic seems like a solid choice.

Somebody needs to invent a 3-wide car seat that could be installed in the back seat of a sedan. With current safety requirements it is impossible to fit three individual car seats side by side, so it is impossible for more than two young children to ride in most cars.

You're right that one paper doesn't make a huge difference. If you can be a marginal participant on many high-citation group projects, that's a fast-track to a high h-index. That is certainly easier than grinding out several high-impact first-author papers. A better metric would partition the citation volume among the co-authors based on their contribution. E.g., on a 3-author paper, the first author gets 50% credit, second author gets 30% credit, and the third author gets 20% credit. Many journals now have "Author Contributions" sections that give more information about what each author contributed to the paper.

There is a show on Apple TV called "Silo", which depicts a post-apocalyptic civilization living inside a massive subterranean city. Higher floors are generally considered to have higher status: after all, trash falls downward in the silo but never upward. This is a good illustration to understand what historians call the Great Copernican Cliché. Modern science educators like Carl Sagan have pointed to Copernicus's debunking of geocentrism as one of the "great demotions...delivered to human pride". If we were at the physical center of the universe, you'd think this implies we are cosmically important; i.e., geocentrism implies anthropocentrism. However, this paper by Dennis Danielson convincingly argues that people in Copernicus's time were much more likely to conceptualize Earth as a "silo". A medieval philosopher might have told you we live in the lower part of the universe where filth accumulates, in contrast to the light-filled expanse above us. The cliché comes from projecting contemporary worldviews onto the past.
